CHECK OUT FOOTBALL AND FUTBOL’S BOOKSTORE   I had to include a little play on words in the title of the article so you will be intrigued to visit and view my breakdown of the Giants’ secondary. The really funny part is that the Giants secondary is second to none in the NFC East in regards that all teams struggled mightily last season in the secondary. Three out of the four teams were in the bottom half of the league in passing yards per game with the lone team surprisingly being the Eagles who finished ninth. Let’s not get too happy Eagles fans, you finished last in the league in passing touchdowns, giving up 33 compared to your lame 9 interceptions. Needless to say, everyone’s secondary was terrible!   Cornerback Let’s go ahead and look no further than Prince Amukamara. At right cornerback, the third year pro and former first round pick, Amukamara has been a flat out disappointment so far.  Listen, I get it, stats do not say everything and honestly when it comes to the secondary stats can be very misleading. If you do not have a dominant front seven, your secondary looks terrible, and if you do have a dominant front seven, they look awesome. Amukumara, with one interception and seven pass deflections last season, is playing below average. I mean, he has a total of two interceptions and ten pass deflections for his career. Looking on the bright side, he is getting better. His best all-around game was against the 49ers where he had six total tackles, one interception and three pass deflections. Backing up Amukamara right now on the unofficial depth chart is Jayron Hosley, whose stats are very comparable to the starter. The Giants would not miss a beat if he was to come in and play pending an injury to Amukamara. By the way, that is not a good thing. On the opposite side, at left corner, Corey Webster is an average cornerback. The 9 year veteran is a staple in the Giants secondary playing for an average of 13 games each year. Webster had four interceptions last year and 13 pass deflections. These stats are average, so what does that say about Prince’s? Oh right, they throw more to Corey’s side because he is not as good as Prince. Terrell Thomas is listed on the depth chart right now as the backup to Webster. Thomas, who missed the past two seasons because of knee injuries, was putting together a hall of fame career his first three seasons with the Giants. Giants’ fans can only hope he can return to that form; I doubt it. Listed third on the depth chart is a guy I refuse to leave out but also refuse to go into depth about in Aaron Ross. As a veteran, Ross deserves to be mentioned, but in 2010, Terrell Thomas finished with 101 tackles, five interceptions and 21 pass deflections. Last year, Ross finished with 46 tackles, three pass deflections and zero interceptions. Put that into perspective and you will see that he is not the answer and will fight for a roster spot. He will always win as long as he is married to Sanya Richards-Ross though. Safety After speaking on the cornerbacks, obviously safety is the strong point of the Giants’ secondary.  Antrel Rolle is a model of consistency. He has played in 15 out of 16 games each of his previous 8 years in the NFL with the one outlier being his rookie season when he only played in 5. He has averaged 84 tackles over that seven year span and has a total of 17 interceptions for his career. This guy is good. You know what you are going to get from Rolle and that is a lot of tackles and a few interceptions each year. You can live with that and you know he is giving it his all while he is out there. Will Hill is listed right now on the depth chart behind Antrel Rolle, and is presumed to remain there. In limited time he played well last year with a total of 38 tackles and two forced fumbles. On the other side is a guy Giants’ fans should be most exciting about in Stevie Brown. This guy was a 7th round pick Oakland who spent his first two years with them and the Colts. Those two seasons are not important at all. Last season, Brown had played in all 16 games and had a total of 76 tackles. He finished the season with eight interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Oakland found a gem and let him go…typical.  I see no reason to doubt Brown having a repeat season. Playing behind Brown is Ryan Mundy who played sparingly with the Steelers last year. This guy is what he is, a capable backup.   Not one single team in the NFC East has a secondary to rave over and this has been the issue for the league over the past few seasons. I expect the Giants to get better in the secondary this year but only because it will be hard for Amukamara to get any worse. I also will expect their front seven to be as dominant as they usually are which will give them a huge boost.
