A few years ago, Gregg Williams was persona non grata in the NFL after his role in the bounty scandal during his time as the defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. He was subsequently given an indefinite suspension by the NFL. Apparently, Williams showed enough contrition to have his suspension lifted, and he spent last season as a senior assistant coach for the Tennessee Titans’ defense. Now, he has been hired by the St. Louis Rams as their defensive coordinator, signaling his return to prominence in the NFL. Williams and Rams head coach Jeff Fisher are longtime friends, and he was originally Fisher’s choice to be the team’s defensive coordinator when Fisher took the Rams job back in 2012. But then the bounty scandal story broke and Williams was released before ever working with the team. Now Fisher has shown loyalty to his friend and has brought him back on board. Clearly he believes in Williams as a coordinator and a person, and believes he’s contrite for his actions with the Saints. Williams employs an aggressive, blitz-heavy 4-3 scheme. He will take over a Rams unit that ranked 15th in the NFL in total defense (345.0 yards allowed per game), 19th in pass defense (242.1 yards per game), ninth in run defense (102.9 yards per game) and 13th in points allowed per game (22.8). St. Louis also ranked third in the NFL in sacks (53) and should continue that trend thanks to Williams’ aggressive scheme. To make room for Williams, the team fired current defensive coordinator Tim Walton. Williams will have some serious talent to work with in St. Louis and could elevate the team even higher thanks to his outstanding instincts and ability to gameplan.
