The St. Louis Rams thought they were getting a huge pickup in Cortland Finnegan when they signed him ahead of the 2012 season, but that quite simply was not the case. Finnegan quite simply looked as if he didn’t have much left in the tank all of last season, and was getting torched by opposing receivers routinely. St. Louis couldn’t afford to wait around another year and hope that he figured things out, so they decided to make the move to cut him and save some money. St.Louis thank you for your letting me play for a classy franchise and coach fish nothing but love thank you all. #Motivation @AdamSchefter — Cortland Finnegan (@CortFinnegan) March 5, 2014 To say the very least, this tweet shows just how classy of a player Finnegan was to the Rams’ organization. Quite often players are mad about getting cut, but Finnegan understands why the move is being made. It will be interesting to see if another team decides to give him an opportunity to turn his career around this offseason. Finnegan played in just seven games last season with the St. Louis Rams, making 27 tackles and intercepting one pass. It is sad to see one of the most pesky cornerbacks begin to lose his ability, but it appears that there just isn’t much left in Finnegan’s career. There will likely be a few teams show him some interest in free agency, but there will be concerns about the level of frequency that he was getting beat in coverage. Overall, this was a good move for both sides as things simply weren’t working out with the Rams. The Rams will save some money and a much needed $4 million in cap space. Finnegan will get the chance to look elsewhere to find a role that he believes will fit him better. Don’t be surprised to see him land a new job here in the next couple of weeks.
