Time for the second running of my Steelers Mock Draft.  The Senior Bowl has past and more tape has been watched.  Many things have changed and more info is out on all the potential draftees.  Guys have made big names for themselves with their play in the Senior Bowl.  The board is constantly shifting and some guys have had major jumps and others have fallen off the face of the earth.

A lot has changed in the Steelers world as well since the first mock draft.  Chris Hoke has retired.  Casey Hampton is having major surgery.  We have developed a huge need at the Nose Tackle position.  We also have no left tackle.  Marcus Gilbert may have to make the switch but it does not sound like the coaches are too excited about it.  They like him on the right side.  Things have changed as they always do. So it is time to update this draft.  Here is the first version to see updates.

2012 Steelers Mock Draft:

  1. Dont’a Hightower- MLB, Alabama- I am still on Hightower.  I almost had a change of heart with Mike Adams out of Ohio State.  He moved himself well ahead of the 24th pick in the draft now though.  He will go in the top 15.  Hightower will fill the need of ILB for the long term future.  He fits the mold of what we need as a thumper in the middle.  Also he is an outstanding pass rusher who hits like a truck.
  2. Brandon Washington- OG, The U- Washington is a stud on the inside.  He was moved to LT in his senior year because the Canes needed him there but his true position is LG.  He will be a solid starter there for years.  After hearing Mr. Rooney mention protecting Roethlisberger better this season offensive line seems to be a priority.  It has been in the past few seasons with the picks of Pouncey and Gilbert.  Bringing in Washington in the second round would give the team three picks in the first two rounds on the offensive line.  It would go a long way to improving this line and this team.
  3. George Iloka- FS, Boise State- Iloka is on this board for one major reason.  He is a tight end killer.  His skill at safety is good but he can cover a tight end all over the field.  With the tight end being the new weapon in the NFL Iloka is a guy you want on your team.  He plays the run well.  He has the size to make the hit.  He is solid in coverage but his ability to take away a tight end goes a long way to him being a good player in the NFL.
  4. Mike Martin- NT, Michigan- Sticking with Martin just moved him up a round.  He will not be there in the fifth.  If he produces at the Combine he may not be here in the fourth.
  5. Terrance Ganaway- RB/FB, Baylor-  The Steelers are going to need to bring in a fullback type player with whoever comes in to be the offensive coordinator.  Ganaway is a big boy at 6′ and 241 pounds.  He can block for Mendenhall instead of David Johnson.  He also played at Baylor so he can run and catch the ball.  He would be a good replacement in the backfield once we start using a fullback.
  6. Derek Wolfe- DE/DT, Cincinnati- The Steelers are going to end up needing some depth at DE if Ziggy Hood has to move to NT.  Wolfe would be a good option to groom behind Keisel.  He may never be a stud but for a sixth round pick he could be a good contributor.
  7. Derek Moye-  WR, Penn State- I am keeping Moye here as long as I can.  I really think he is untapped potential.  He just needs someone to throw him the ball.  Give this kid a chance.

Number 2 is down.  I really think the only thing that could sway me away from Dont’a Hightower is if Mike Adams falls to us or if Hampton is forced to retire because of injury and we need Dontari Poe.  This draft fills most of our holes where we need depth.  Next Mock Draft will be after the combine.
