In what was my favorite news of the day the Steelers met with Dont’a Hightower and Dontari Poe according to Ken Laird of Trib Live Radio.  Hightower is my favorite prospect in this draft, at least where I think the Steelers can actually reach to.  This is something I like to see.  Hightower could replace James Farrior day one.  Poe would be a good replacement for Casey Hampton.  Both Guys could be 1st round targets for the Steelers.

Hightower had a great interview.  He also came in at 6’2 and 265 pounds.  That is 2 inches smaller then what was expected.  That will not hurt anything.  Hightower carries his weight well and is the perfect size to play the thumper role in the 3-4 defense.  One question teams have on Hightower is his injury and how it affects his speed.  Hightower had knee surgery in 2009.  He has recovered well but it is still a question that he will have to answer to in interviews and with his movement at the combine.  If Hightower can run 4.65 or below he will continue to move up draft boards.

Hightower did have some insight to who it seemed like he wanted to play for.  He sounded like he wanted to be either a Raven or a Steeler.  He was more expressive about the Ravens naming Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs as guys it would be “a dream come true” to play with.  He then named LaMarr Woodley and James Harrison as guys he looks up to.  He has interest in the Steelers and it sounds like the Steelers have interest in him.

Dontari Poe called Casey Hampton a player that he “admires most.” Poe is a big weight room guy.  He hopes to put up 40 reps.  Poe is s strong kid.  He is also a big boy.  He is 6’4 and 346 pounds.  Poe is a good stout run defender who can eat up blockers.  Poe also is a little bit quicker to the ball then Hampton.  He has a better pass rush.  It sometimes gets him out of position but he gets pressure.  That can be taught in the NFL.  He can learn when he should penetrate and when he needs to just plug the hole.

Hightower has already met with some of the Steelers scouts and was looking forward to meeting with Coach Tomlin tonight.  I hope it goes well.  I want Hightower on this team.  Hightower will have his Pro Day at Alabama on March 7th.  The Steelers should be in attendance.  Poe will have his Pro Day on March 22nd.  The Steelers will be able to attend both.

The Steelers have also met with a few other prospects.  Pitt guard Lucas Nix and  Cincinnati running back Isaiah Pead.  As more guys are interviewed we will get them to you.
