Russell Wilson, the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, is only making $662K this season. While that may be a lot of money to you and me, it is paltry in comparison to the multi-millions that a host of other starters are making. He isn't even making as much as ESPN analyst and Hall of Fame QB Steve Young is, and Young signed his deal way back in 1985 with a team in a league that no longer exists. Credit Young and his former agent Leigh Steinberg with the deal, but also the buffoonery of J. William Oldenburg. He was the owner of the defunct USFL franchise the LA Express. He wanted a superstar on his team, and he believed Young was it, and that he could be the guy to help the league take on the NFL. Young received what was the richest deal ever, paying him $40 million. Of course, just a couple of years later, Young was running for his life with the Tampa Bay Bucs before becoming Joe Montana's backup and eventual replacement, and the USFL closed up shop. But, Young continued to receive a paycheck from his former employer and still does to this day, due to some wise planning. Read more →
