One would think that if you can stop the run, defending the pass should be easy, right? Obvious passing situations, no problem right?

The Patriots defensive secondary is setting pass defense back centuries.
Injuries are playing their part. The absence of Patrick Chung and Steve Gregory has Matt Patricia moving pieces around to help the safety position.
Devin McCourty played some, helping with the lack of experience that aided Sidney Rice to waltz past rookies Tavon Wilson and Nate Ebner for the game winning touchdown last week.
However, safety isn't the only concern as cornerback has become increasingly unstable. Moving McCourty just creates a big void at corner, thus the mix and match, not a full time switch.
Alfonzo Dennard is the new hot name getting kicked around. The rookie 7th rounder from Nebraska has shown some ball skills along with a physical style.
Ras-I Dowling was supposed to be one of the outside corner positions, but he's regressed to a point where he is rarely seeing the field. Kyle Arrington has slipped to 4th corner and his stock is dropping even faster.
Arrington is biting on double moves like Homer Simpson on doughnuts. Sterling Moore, who is a candidate to play safety, has been spending his time at corner and not safety. There isn't any more you can say about that.
The Patriots are starting to try some different styles, as for the first time this year they played press coverage more consistently.
Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia seem to be experimenting through the injuries and lackluster play to find the right combination.
On the other hand, the front seven are very successful against the run. Ranked 6th in the league, they held Shonn Greene to just 54 yards.

How can a team be able to force a team to become one dimensional, only to falter in that dimension?
Brandon Spikes has emerged into a big time hitter who can force fumbles with jarring hits. The addition of Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower not only adds speed, they also have non stop motors that seek out ball carriers.
The secondary needs to see the growth the linebacking corps have undertaken. However, the talent or coaching isn't up to snuff.
