The NFL sent out an official memo to several players late last week alerting them that those terrifying customized ‘Bane’ facemasks that have become somewhat popular over the past few years would no longer be league-approved. The league stated that the facemasks, which have been worn by several defensive players recently, are now prohibited unless a player has a medical clearance to wear them. Tuck and Canty have already filed and been approved for medical clearance, so the custom grills won’t entirely disappear. Canty suffered a serious eye injury in 2005 and needs the protection to play. Tuck is fighting a neck injury and doesn’t want opponents reaching inside his helmet and yanking his head. However, several other players’ requests for clearance have been denied – including the Colts’ Robert Mathis and the Cowboys’ Demarcus Ware.
