No matter if you prefer high school, college, or pro football, you can tune in to a game on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, and there’s a decent chance you’ll see at least one team utilizing option concepts.  To the football junkie, this is an exciting development.  There’s more to watch, study, read about, and learn than ever before.  While that’s truly an awesome thing, there’s a downside.  Enthusiasts and practitioners of anything “new” are also more likely to encounter more criticism, much of it invalid or misdirected. As the option concepts have started to take root in the NFL, many who fetishize the NFL as the paragon of football creativity have spent much ink and bandwidth proclaiming the option as a fad, soon to be lost down the memory hole like the Run N Shoot or the Air Coryell offense.  Make no mistake, the NFL is at the top of the evolutionary football ladder.  The reason for this, however, isn’t that NFL coaches are inherently revolutionary.  They’ve simply co-opted the bottom up innovation of every other level of football, and they’re very good at it.
