Hosts Steve Bennett and Don Russ interview the biggest names in sports media and pop culture each week on Football Nation's The Sports-Casters podcast.

Their guest this week is Andrew Lawrence, writer and reporter for Sports Illustrated and SI.com.

In the wake of the death of Junior Seau, Lawrence authored a piece on SI.com that detailed the leagues increased focus on mental heath issues and how a new position on most team's staff the called Director of Player Development has helped get some players to open up about mental health.

Lawrence and the boys discuss how teams are dealing with mental health issues and gives his opinion on several other off season issues from around the National Football League:

Lawrence also says:

  • The players union missed an opportunity during the last CBA negotiation to build in protections for players that want to focus on mental health issues off the field
  • The first few years after retirement are extremely crucial to a players long term success after their playing days are over
  • Hines Ward should make an easy transition from the field to the broadcast booth
  • University of Washington quarterback Keith Price is the focus of some of his work for the upcoming SI College Football Preview
  • USC should win the Pac-12 this year, but depth could be an issue due to previous NCAA sanctions if the Trojans do not stay healthy

Steve and Don kick off each podcast with "3 Things" but manage to tackle so much more. In this week's segment they discuss the Dolphins agreeing to be featured on "Hard Knocks" and debate Coach Joe Philbin's comment that the decision to be on Hard Knocks was a football decision. Also, Steve and Don chat about Warren Sapp's new book, the death of the daily newspaper in New Orleans, and reflect on the career of Terrell Owens.
