In 1967 the NFL turned 48, while the Pittsburgh Steelers celebrated 35 years. Pittsburgh started strong on September 17th versus the Chicago Bears. A tight first quarter saw the Bears lead 13 - 10 but Chicago let the game slip away and the Pittsburgh Steelers went on to score 31 unanswered points and close the contest 41 – 13. The highs of victory soon became the sediment that swirled the drain as the Steelers went on to lose the next five games and finish the year with a record of 4 – 9 – 1, and last place in the new Century Division. 1967 was also the year the NFL expanded to 16 teams with the addition of the New Orleans Saints, who finished last place in the Capitol Division with a record of 3 – 11. Baltimore’s Johnny Unitas was voted the league MVP.
