On this day in 1969 The Manning dynasty begins. College Football Hall of Famer Archie Manning became the first player in college football history to throw for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in the same game as Ole Miss faced No. 15 Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama. Manning passed for 436 yards and two touchdowns while adding 104 rushing yards and three additional scores. Alabama, however, won the game 33-32 capped by a 15-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 3:42 remaining from quarterback Scott Hunter to wide receiver George Ranager. In a sense, Manning invented the term “dual-threat quarterback,” or at least innovated it. The closest Eli Manning ever came to this mark came in 2002 win against Vanderbilt when Eli passed for 386 yards and ran for ten. I did not dig deep enough to go through Peyton Manning’s game log while at Tennessee but his collegiate career high in rushing for an entire season was six yards in 1995.
