In addition to my usual start em and sit em article I will be adding a Thursday Night Football preview.  My standard start em and sit em article will be written following the injury report release on Friday. Lets take a quick look at some of the key numbers, and then get to the start em and sit em portion of the article. Defensive statistics San Diego Chargers defense (week 9) – Rush D – 79.9 YPG (2nd in NFL) / Passing – 246.6 YPG (21st in NFL) Kansas City Chiefs defense (week 9) –  Rush D – 126.4 YPG (23rd in NFL) / Pass D – 222.3 YPG (11th in NFL)  Offensive statistics San Diego Chargers Offense (week 9) – Rush O – 103.4 YPG (20th in NFL) / Pass O – 217.4 YPG (21st in NFL) Kansas City Chiefs Offense (week 9) – Rush O – 155.1 YPG (3rd in NFL) / Pass O – 212.1 YPG (22nd in NFL) This is one of those something’s got to give games.  The K.C. Chiefs bring in the 3rd best rushing attack to face the 2nd best rush D in the San Diego Chargers. The best matchup of the game falls to the San Diego RB’s as they get to face a defense ranked 23rd against the rush giving up 126.4 yards per game. Start ‘em Ryan Mathews – RB – San Diego Chargers Keeping in mind this is a divisional matchup, I expect Ryan Mathews to run wild over the Chiefs D on Thursday Night Football.  Although Mathews has some ball control issues, he is still one of the more explosive backs in the NFL, and against a bottom 3rd defense this is a matchup fantasy owners will want to exploit. Jamaal Charles – RB – Kansas City Chiefs As previously noted, this will be one of Charles toughest matchups of the season.  As long as the game doesn’t get away from the Chiefs, expect Charles to get 15+ carries in this game as one of K.C.’s biggest offensive weapons.  In their week 4 matchup with the Chargers, Charles had 17 carries for 88 yards and a TD.  Jamaal Charles is a RB2/ Flex play for this matchup. Dwayne Bowe – WR – Kansas City Chiefs I can almost hear the groans as I type in Bowe’s name to the start ‘em column.  But we need to look a little closer at the numbers.  Over the first 4 weeks when Cassel was starting and healthy here are Bowe’s catches by week.  3, 8, 7, 7.  In week 4 his opponent was?  The San Diego Chargers when he had 7 catches for 108 yards and a TD.  I’m not saying he is a WR1 for this matchup, but he makes sense as a WR3/ Flex Play Sit ‘em Philip Rivers – QB – San Diego Chargers Rivers has thrown 10 TD’s to 11 INT’s this year, and had just 154 passing yards in week 8 against the Cleveland Browns.  He is an unreliable option at QB, and while he could still have a 300+ yard game, it just isn’t worth the gamble at this point.  Only desperate owners in 2 QB leagues should be considering him an option in week 9.  If you need a bye week replacement for a Tom Brady type in week 9, give Josh Freeman or Carson Palmer a look.  Fantasy scoring wise they have been outperforming Rivers all year. Matt Cassel – QB – Kansas City Chiefs Coming back from injury, and with a lack of depth at WR, Cassel should not be conisdered for a week 9 roster spot.  When the Chiefs get down he does put up solid numbers, but against a lackluster Chargers offense which scored just 6 points in week 8 against the Browns, it is no guarantee that Cassel will have to air it out. Antonio Gates – TE – San Diego Chargers It looked like Gates had snapped out of his funk in week 7 against the Broncos as he caught 6 passes for 81 yards and 2 TDs, but in week 8 he had just 2 receptions for 14 yards and 0 TD’s.  I still expect Rivers to start targeting his big TE more, and this could be just the week, but until that happens you have to keep Gates stashed on your bench.  If your regular TE is on a BYE (Gronk?) then Gates is an option, but the bad weeks have far outnumered the good to this point in the season so he remains a TE2 in most formats San Diego Chargers – Wide Receivers I don’t care which of the Chargers wide receivers you have, the QB play has been too inconsistent, and no clear #1 option has emerged in this offense.  Unless you are desperate and have to start Floyd or Meachem, they are best left on your bench or waivers this week. Alright that is it for this week’s article for Thursday Night Football.  Jump into the forums if you would like to discuss any of my opinions for this week. KANSAS CITY, MO – SEPTEMBER 30: Eric Weddle #32 of the San Diego Chargers returns the football after intercepting a pass by Matt Cassel #7 of the Kansas City Chiefs during the game at Arrowhead Stadium on September 30, 2012 in Kansas City, Missouri.
