Tim Tebow is really unhappy with his birthday present

Today is Tim Tebow’s 25th birthday, and while he’s not doing Jesus-pose photo shoots with GQ, he is still trying to find his role with the New York Jets. Rex Ryan and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano seem to looking for somewhere, anywhere, to put the polarizing backup quarterback, giving him reps with the second team, developing a “secret” wildcat package, and even putting him on the field as personal protector on punts. While the Jets seem a little hazy on what they’ll do with the holiest of hurlers, but don’t worry Jets fans…Chad Pennington IS HERE TO MENTOR!

According to ESPN.com, Pennington, who was unceremoniously kicked to the curb by the Jets in 2008, showed up to practice on Tuesday to give both young quarterbacks a few pointers…likely on the best way to completely destroy every moving part of your shoulder.

The idea to bring Pennington to camp happened when he ran into Jets general manger Mike Tannenbaum at the Hall of Fame ceremony for Curtis Martin, and Tannebaum invited the former quarterback to camp. You have to wonder how poorly things are going, though, if the GM is pining for the glory days of Chad Pennington.

The soft-shouldered signal caller has a lot of history with many of the current Jets. In addition to being a member of the team right up until getting cut the day after New York signed Brett Favre in August of 2008, Pennington spent three seasons with the Dolphins and Sparano. Sparano was so impressed with Pennington’s abilities, it inspired him to develop an offense where Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams took snaps instead. So at the very least he can give Mark Sanchez guidance on what it’s like to lose snaps in the middle of a drive.

Speaking of Sanchez, the incumbent underachiever flew down to Pennington’s home in South Florida this offseason to pick the retired quarterback’s brain. They spent several hours discussing Sparano’s philosophy and system, presumably giving Sanchez a head start in the new Jets’ offense over Tebow. So expect to see Sanchez’s shoulder explode at least three weeks before Tebow’s…but still two weeks after getting benched for him.

Is this what the Jets have become? Are they such a circus of nonsense that Chad Pennington is their ace-in-the-hole consultant? Pennington, the fourth leading passer in Jets’ history (FEEL THE TRADITION!), is better known for a career of disapointments and late-season collapses to go along with his papier-mâché shoulder.

In fact, the greatest accomplishment of Pennington’s career came in 2008 when he knocked the Jets out of the playoffs, leading the Dolphins to a win in New York in Week 17. Four years later, it looks like he’ll get to destroy the Jets’ playoff hopes once more, but this time from the inside and with the very best of intentions.
