One of the key off season acquisitions for the New England Patriots was veteran safety Adrian Wilson. Wilson should be able to help a defensive secondary which is generally seen as the Patriots weakest link and has been slowly improving after being one of the worst in the league during the 2010 season. Wilson is far and away the biggest player, physically, in the Patriots secondary. Overall, he should be able to help the defense in both the running and passing aspects of the game. While Wilson will likely contribute to New England’s run defense, it is not really an area where they are in dire need with the likes of Vince Wilfork up front. However, he will be able to come up and be an eighth man in the box for players like Arian Foster, Stephen Jackson, Trent Richardson and Ray Rice who the Patriots will see at some point this season. In the passing game, his physicality should allow the Patriots to close down the middle of the field better which should help the team to allow fewer first downs from the pass. They were seventh worst last season in first downs allowed from the pass. He’s also capable of coming up to the line for blitz packages and putting pressure on the quarterback. Last season with the Cardinals he recorded three sacks. This may not seem like much but New England only had one player in their secondary, Derrick Martin, record a sack which was also his only sack. While Wilson’s age is a concern it should not be a problem for New England. It will probably help the team in regard to his being a respected veteran amongst a core of young players. Also, the Patriots will be able to keep him fresh by having him split time with Devin McCourty and Steve Gregory who held down the safety position last season for the Patriots. Despite the fact that Wilson was released from Arizona for his declining statistics it only seems to have made him more motivated. Reports from Patriots training camp indicate that Wilson was all over the field deflecting passes, intercepting passes and closing off the top of the defense. It’s likely he will be a positive contributor to the defense in one capacity or another. He is reported to have lined up at both safety and even middle linebacker during offseason training.

Tom Brady says he can play ‘beyond 40′

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady says he has simply “moved on” when asked for his reaction to the murder charge against his former tight end Aaron Henandez. “I’ve seen a lot of things over 13 years, and what I have learned is that mental toughness and putting aside personal agendas for what’s in the best interest of the team matters most,” Brady

Jake Ballard may not be a lock to make the Patriots final roster

It looks like Patriots tight end Jake Ballard still isn’t ready to get on the field since he’s now been placed on the PUP list for the start of training camp. People seem to not realize how serious microfracture surgery is because of how difficult it is to come back from. Ballard ended up tearing up his knee back in February 2012 during Super Bowl XLVI and he still isn’t right...

USA Today still has high hopes for Patriots and Hernandez

It looks like USA Today didn't hear the news.  According to a tweet by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the newspaper's NFL 2013 preview issue still wasn't aware about the stories out of Boston concerning accused murderer Aaron Hernandez when they went to press last week. Maybe with all of the excitement about Tim Tebow coming to town and everything — the story got lost...

2013 Over/Under: Danny Amendola Catches

OVER/UNDER: 70 Catches (Regular Season) Prediction- Over (76 catches): I'm feeling optimistic about Amendola this year. While I was disappointed to see Welker go, I do believe Amendola has the ability to be a more dynamic and explosive player than Wes. Obviously, his main weakness was Welker's biggest strength: durability. And that weakness above all could put Amendola&...

Jake Ballard's stock wavering early in camp

BY NICK ST. DENISEven before Aaron Hernandez was arrested for murder and while Rob Gronkowski was in the midst of recovering from his fourth surgery in less than a year, Jake Ballard was a potential impact player for the New England Patriots' tight end-friendly offense. After being signed by the Patriots last year, the former New York Giant spent all of last season recovering...

Patriots' Off-Season Grade Is 'D' -- Even Before The Arrests

Let’s start by getting all the usual words of praise out of the way.  The Patriots are a very good team, they are likely to win the AFC East this year, and they re-signed a some of their own, important free agents.  But none of that excuses the poor 2013 off-season, which ranked a solid “D,” even before two of their starters were arrested. From a football standpoint, the...

The Patriots may have their quarterback of the future already on the roster, and, no, it’s not Ryan Mallett or Tim Tebow. Tom Brady is the quarterback for now and, from what he told SI’s Peter King recently, his tenure with the team could go a lot farther than what many might expect. Brady, who will turn 36 in a few short weeks, signed a contract extension earlier this offseason...

Time To Be AccountaBILL

Has anyone else used that god-awful headline yet? Sometimes I’m envious of the sports-radio host mentality. It must just be so awesome to sit in judgment, move goalposts and criticize an outcome no matter which way it goes. I loved Felger yesterday attempting to make the point that since all the Belichick toadies said he shouldn’t talk, that they should now be pissed at him because...
