The Turn On The Jets Roundtable is back to debate issues surrounding the New York Jets. Make sure to give all of the writers a follow on Twitter and if there is a question you want to see us debate, leave it in the comment section!  Who is currently the most overrated player on the New York Jets?   Joe Caporoso -  This isn’t the easiest question to answer about the 2013 New York Jets but I’m taking Santonio Holmes over David Harris, who was dreadful last season. At this point, I’m not sure there is any type of renaissance coming for Harris who might just be a slowed-down, run stuffing linebacker in a league that is moving to increasingly spread offenses. Holmes on the other hand has the physical talent necessary to be a competent number one receiver, which is tantalizing when projecting things for the Jets offense but will he ever have the consistency to really be one? People often forget that in seven NFL seasons, Holmes has one 1,000 yard season and only one year with over 55 catches (both in 2009). If he played a full year for the Jets in 2010, he might have two of each but he didn’t. Particularly coming off injury, it’d be foolish to expect true #1 receiver numbers from Holmes. It might be time to look at him as a 1A option on a team with a weak group of receivers. Even an optimistic prediction for Holmes’ stats this year shouldn’t exceed 60 catches for 800-850 yards. TJ Rosenthal -  Wow that is a tough one. Few Jets who were poised to have good seasons in 2012 completely and visibly plummeted except for the Sanchize. Joe McKnight to our chagrin, never became integrated with the offense but, but overrated? As in others believing he is a force yet who has seen their play resemble that of a mere mortal? McKnight does not fall in that category. Neither does Mark Sanchez. I wanted a lot more out of David Harris last season though. Blame it on injuries or other teams scheming against him if you’d like, but I just have a picture of Harris as someone that fans of other teams fear when they play the Jets. He made a lot fewer impactful plays than I expected him to. I hope that changes in 2013. Mike Donnelly - This would have been a much easier question to answer last year when there were a ton of options to choose from like Dustin Keller, Brandon Moore, or Shonn Greene. When you look at the roster now though, are there really any players you can say are overrated? I mean, sure players like Santonio Holmes and David Harris are wildly overpaid, but are they really that overrated? Do people really think they are that great to begin with? Tough to say. The one player that it isn’t tough for me to say is overrated right now is one that has not even actually played a single down in the NFL. That man is Geno Smith. The feeling amongst many Jets fans is that just because Geno’s name isn’t “Mark Sanchez” and because he had a good day at rookie minicamp against UDFA’s that he is ready to step in and be an effective NFL starter. That is putting the cart before the horse in my mind because while Geno does have talent and should be groomed and prepared to start, there is just no way to say he is ready to step in on Day 1 and help the Jets win games. Let’s see him play against actual NFL competition and prove he can grasp an NFL playbook that is much different than the offense he ran in college before we start heaping praise on this rookie and expecting big things from him. Mike Nolan - Although after his injury in 2012, he might not be as overrated now as he once was, the Jets’ most overrated player is Santonio Holmes. I could just be bitter because somehow I end up with this guy every year in fantasy football, and every year he completely disappoints me. Even so, Holmes was given a big contract after an MVP Super Bowl performance in 2008 and a breakout season in 2009. Although he has made some clutch plays in a Jets’ uniform, his body of work leaves a lot to be desired. Since he was traded to the Jets, he has not had more than 52 catches in a season and has a yard per catch average that is on a downward trend as he is no longer the deep threat he was in Pittsburgh. Yet all I hear about is how Holmes is a pure #1 guy when healthy and how he needs to ”return to form” in 2013. What form? 50 catches a year? Some might attribute his lack of production to bad quarterback play, but in reality, at this point in his career, Holmes isn’t a true #1 receiver, and I’m not convinced he ever was. Completely contradicting what I just said, the good news is that if he can stay healthy in 2013, he might have a resurgence in Marty Mornhinweg’s offense as he really hasn’t had a pure #1 option since Terrell Owens in San Francisco. Mornhinweg has had success in the past with receivers that had similar skill sets to Holmes. Connor Rogers – Calling a player overrated can be a sensitive topic, but David Harris‘ play last season was definitely underwhelming. To begin, paying a 3-4 inside linebacker $13 million per season is an absolute sin. Even worse, Harris barely put together a mediocre season last year. He’s too slow to cover anyone and got swallowed by blockers against the run at times. For the Jets sake, hopefully playing alongside the declining trio of Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, and Bryan Thomas played a huge part in his worst pro season yet. Dalbin Osorio – It would be very easy to select Mark Sanchez as the Jets’ most overrated player and just leave it at that. However, people forget just how lights out Moscato Mark played in the 2009 and 2010 playoffs beating Phillip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady, so is it possible that Mark is now underrated? Another topic for a different roundtable. The most overrated player on the Jets is David Harris. When you’re paying your middle linebacker top MLB money, you expect top MLB play. He struggled in run support, and seemed to be out of position on every slash or draw ran in his direction. Considering that Harris had 5 sacks and 4 interceptions in 2011 (compared to only 3 sacks and 0 interceptions last year), Jets fans can hope that last season was just a one year aberration.
