Bengals players Vontaze Burfict and George Iloka cashed in during the 2013 season, securing two of the top five performance-based pay distributions for 2013. Under the Performance-Based Pay system, a fund is created and used as a supplemental form of player compensation based on a comparison of playing time to salary. Players become eligible to receive a bonus distribution in any regular season in which they play at least one official down. Performance-Based Pay is computed by using a “player index.” To produce the index, a player’s regular-season playtime (total plays on offense, defense and special teams) is divided by his adjusted regular-season compensation (full season salary, prorated portion of signing bonus, earned incentives). Each player’s index is then compared to those of the other players on his team to determine the amount of his pay, the NFL press release said. Each player plays for his own share of his teams performance-based pay pool. In 2013 that pool was $3,460,000 for each team The average performance-based bonus for the 2013 season was $55,471. The median bonus was $38,081 and the largest bonus was $318,244, awarded to the Bears tackle Jordan Mills. The linebacker Burfict led all NFL players last season in performance-based pay with $299,465. This year he received a bonus of $315,848, the second most. Burfict started for the entire season and finished with 115 tackles, three sacks, one interception, eight pass deflections, one forced fumble and a touchdown. Burfict signed a three-year rookie contract worth $1,441,000 with a signing bonus of $1,000, but he has also earned $615,000 in Performance-Based Pay. His teammate, safety George Iloka earned the fourth most with $281,515. Iloka started all 16 games this season, recording 43 tackles, grabbing an interception, six pass deflections and forcing two fumbles. By agreement with the NFL Players Association, the players will receive their performance-based pay distributions April 1, 2016.
