No decision has been made about the Browns starting quarterback for the season finale against the Steelers on Jan. 1 in Cleveland. Seneca Wallace says Colt McCoy deserves to start if healthy because McCoy started the first 13 games. McCoy missed the last two games because of the concussion suffered Dec. 8 in Pittsburgh. Wallace started against the Cardinals and Ravens and came up short both times. The Browns have lost eight of their last nine games, so the last two defeats cannot be blamed totally on Wallace. Wallace has always been somewhere between accepting his role as a career backup and thinking he has never been given the same opportunity to start as the declared starter in the next locker. Wallace was 1-3 as a starter last year. He was a free agent after 2010 but re-signed with the Browns because he knew the offense the Browns would run and he felt loyalty to Browns president Mike Holmgren, who coached Wallace for six years in Seattle. "If I'm loyal to somebody I expect them to be loyal to me, and it's been that way throughout my career," Wallace said. "At the same time, I haven't had that legit opportunity to be the No. 1. Who knows what could happen if I had that opportunity? It might happen. It might not. We'll see." Wallace signed for three years for about 9 million to be McCoy's backup. He'll be 34 and a bit old to strike out on his own when the contract expires at the end of the 2013 season. The game Sunday would be Wallace's 21st career start in his ninth season since being drafted by the Seahawks from Iowa State in the fourth round in 2003. In one breath Wallace says he never got a legitimate chance to start while playing behind Matt Hasselbeck in Seattle and then Jake Delhomme in Cleveland in 2010 and McCoy this season. In the next breath he says he isn't bitter about the situation. "After nine years of being in the NFL, coming from where people said I wouldn't be in the NFL, why would I be bitter?" Wallace said. "Quarterbacks who were drafted before me aren't even in the league anymore -- highly talented quarterbacks, supposedly, from the media's standpoint. "At the end of the day, who's going to get the last laugh? As long as my peers respect what I do, I'm happy with what I accomplished." Wallace is 1-5 as a starter with the Browns and 6-14 for his career. McCoy is 6-15 as a starter. Players do not regard Wallace as a backup. "He knows what he's doing out there," Browns linebacker D'Qwell Jackson said. "He's a great leader. He handles his business like a pro. He has a lot of credibility around this locker room. He has his opportunity, so we'll see what happens." NOTES, QUOTES LINEUP WATCH: Wide receiver Carlton Mitchell, in his second season, caught the first two passes of his career for 12 yards in the 20-14 loss to the Ravens. TRENDING: Running back Peyton Hillis rushed for 112 yards. It was his first 100-yard game of the season. He rushed for 99 yards last week. He will be a free agent in March.
