Trade for Lions: Wow. The Lions must have been really desperate for defensive back help to trade for Kevin Barnes. I know they didn’t give up much, but Barnes might have been a final cut next week. If they wanted him, all they really had to do was wait and put in a waiver claim on him or someone of similar caliber. Barnes was awful last season as the Redskins’ nickel cornerback, grading out as ProFootballFocus’ 86th ranked cornerback out of 98. He lost his job this offseason to Cedric Griffin and had been moving around from cornerback to safety to cornerback. I guess he can provide depth at both of those positions for the Lions, but if he has to see serious action, he’ll get burned again. Considering the state of the Lions’ secondary, he may have to. #1 cornerback Chris Houston is a good player, who allowed 46 completions on 87 attempts (52.9%) for 593 yards (6.8 YPA), 4 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, while deflecting 5 passes and committing 2 penalties. However, they don’t have a ...

CB Barnes says he's traded to Lions

Washington cornerback Kevin Barnes says he's been traded to the Detroit Lions. Barnes said he was informed early Monday afternoon that he was on his way to Detroit. He said he didn't know any other details about the deal. Barnes was a third-round pick by the Redskins in 2009. He's played in 29 games with three starts over three seasons and has three career interceptions...

Jason Hanson named starting kicker as Lions release first set of cuts

The Lions’ all-time scoring leader Jason Hanson will return for his 21st season with the team after winning the kicking role from undrafted rookie Derek Dimke. Heading into camp however it was expected that the 42 year old Hanson would win the job outright and continue an amazing run with the only NFL team he’s ever known. The Lions were also comfortable with giving Hanson the...

Alfred Morris To Start Week 1? Week 3 Round Up and More

Could Alfred Morris wind up being the starter for Week 1? Well according to Chris Russell on Twitter, Redskins HC Mike Shanahan is certainly suggesting it. Shanny is basically sitting on his ever so old mantra of “we’ll play the best players…” which suggests that Alfred Morris could be that guy after torching the Indianapolis Colts for 107 rushing yards and a single TD. Washington...

Donahue, Graham still punting it out

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Other than in the secondary, theres really no more heated competition for a job with the Detroit Lions in the final week of the preseason than at punter. In one (coffin) corner is Ryan Donahue, an undrafted free agent out of Iowa who is in his second year with the Lions. He averaged 42.7 yards on 49 punts in eight games last season with Detroit. In other (coffin...

Gano holds off Rackers in Redskins kicking battle

Incumbent Graham Gano has beaten out Neil Rackers in the competition for the Washington Redskins kicking job. Rackers was among the first round of cuts Monday as the Redskins trimmed their roster to 75 players. Gano won a competition that was mainly decided on the practice field. The Redskins attempted only two field goals in their first three preseason games, both by Rackers....

Lions looking to deal for a running back

With Jahvid Best out for at least the first six weeks of the regular season, Kevin Smith unable to stay healthy for an entire season, Keiland Williams not being a top of the line back and Mikel Leshoure suspended for the first two games of the regular season the Lions certainly have a chaotic running back situation to say the least. After dealing for secondary depth Monday by acquiring...

Redskins release Chris Cooley

Chris Cooley once said it would be terrible to play for another team just when the Washington Redskins were getting good again. He wanted to be a Redskins player for life. One of the mysteries of the offseason was whether he had a place on the team and on the salary cap. Head coach Mike Shanahan informed Captain Chaos that Fred Davis would start at right end. Cooley wants to be...

Chris Cooley Released By Redskins

Forty-Seven Endearing Things About No. 47, Chris Cooley

The Skins released Chris Cooley today. We were pretty big fans. Here are 47 reasons why: 1. He wore short shorts in practice. 2. He wore short shorts over long tights in practice. 3. He was drafted by Joe Gibbs, who’s “queer” for tight ends. 4. He left his car running for nine hours while attending a hockey game. 5. He and his brother competed in (and lost) the Mottram-Cooley...

Cundiff lost a battle with undrafted rookie Justin Tucker with the Ravens. He'll be remembered by Ravens fans for his 32-yard game-tying field...
