Cousins went 6/7 for 52 yards last night and threw a touchdown in his second and final drive of the game. Cousins looked sharp especially in play action, making great fakes and throwing darts to his receivers. It’s not a good sign when young quarterbacks throw risky passes into tight coverage, but with Cousins its okay because of the superior arm strength he has. He helped the Washington Redskins get off to a fast start last night in a 22-21 victory over the Tennessee Titans. Roy Helu Jr. and Evan Royster both had quality outings in the absence of Alfred Morris (coaches decision). The duo combined for 119 yards on the ground. Helu is a great receiving threat out of the backfield and is the Skins best blocker in the backfield on passing downs, making him the clear choice as the 3rd down back. On the receiving front, TE Fred Davis caught Cousin’s touchdown pass. This was the first action he has seen since he ruptured his achilles last season against the Giants. Davis’ touchdown was followed by a dance in which he appeared to be acting as if he was tased. Despite the awkward and confusing dance, the display of mobility is a sign that the injury is no longer affecting Davis. Linebacker Brian Orakpo saw his first action since tearing his left pectoral muscle last year. The former Longhorn, recorded one tackle last night. Safety Brandon Meriweather (knee), DeAngelo Hall (ankle), and Josh Wilson (coaches decision) were scratched from last nights lineup defensively. This provided an opportunity for rookies David Amerson, Baccari Rambo, and Philip Thomas to step up in the secondary. They did a solid job on the whole. The only blemish occurred when Chris Johnson broke a 60 yard TD run in the first quarter and broke Rambo’s ankles in the process. As Coach Shanahan said in his press conference Monday, they will continue to treat Cousins as a starter, but it’s a unique situation. You can never read to much into preseason games but if week one rolls around and Cousins is penciled in as the starter, Redskins fans should not be concerned.
