I got in a heated argument with a friend this week -- about the Carolina Panthers. This friend is not a fan of any NFC South team, isn't passionate about the league's scheduling intricacies and isn't someone who criticized Cam Newton for having a "fake smile" before the 2011 NFL Draft. He's got no real dog in the fight. But he said something that really bothered me this week. He said the same thing I'm hearing a lot of places that just drives me up a wall. "The Panthers haven't beaten anyone." Oh, I hate that. HATE. I don't hate many things. Seriously. I don't hate traffic. I don't hate rainy days without the umbrella. And I don't hate when my friends talk about "Game of Thrones" -- a show I've never seen -- all the freaking time. But I hate the "Panthers haven't played anybody" thing. Why? Because winning in the NFL is hard. Really hard. And when you actually go out and win games -- that...

Carolina Panthers try to make it four in a row this weekend

Talk to people around the Panthers organization and they’ll tell you the last few weeks have been almost like fun and games: the mood has been lighter and happier among the players. Winning will do that. Carolina, after struggling out of the gate to a 1-3 record, have won their last three games in a row and are above .500 for the first time since 2008. Coincidentally, that was...

Can the Falcons stop Cam Newton?

The Falcons are coming off of their worst loss of the season as they fell last weekend by two touchdowns at Arizona. They stay on the road the week and face a tough divisional challenge in Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Coming into the season, one of the things that stood out about the second half of the schedule was the number of "mobile" quarterbacks...

Credit Carolina's 'D' for team's turnaround

While Cam Newton and Co. receive the credit for the Carolina Panthers' turnaround, it's the play of a stifling defense that has them sitting above .500 for the first time in five years entering Week 9. A unit that leads the league in total points allowed (96) and ranks third overall in yards per game, knows how to get after the quarterback. Carolina's defense has yet...

Why The Carolina Panthers Are Among The Hottest Teams In The NFL

All of a sudden the Carolina Panthers are in the NFC playoff race. After a grim 1-3 start to the season they found their feet and put together a three game winning streak to bring them to a much more respectable 4-3, in fact in their last five games the Panthers are 4-1.Who would have thought that at this point of the season from the NFC South the Panthers would have a better shot...

Falcons-Panthers Preview

While Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers are rolling, the same can't be said for Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons. Newton and the Panthers will try to add to the Falcons' woes while earning a fourth consecutive win Sunday. Carolina (4-3) is above .500 for the first time since going 12-4 in 2008, the year it most recently made the playoffs or finished ahead of Atlanta...

Mike Shula, continuity paying off for Carolina Panthers’ offense

When Mike Shula met with Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera to interview for the offensive coordinator job in January, he didn’t do a PowerPoint presentation or slap any pie charts on the table. The only thing Shula brought to the meeting was the playbook – and his vision for what portions of it he would highlight if he were hired to replace Rob Chudzinski. Rivera liked Shula’s...

Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers: Three Bold Predictions

The Carolina Panthers are gaining momentum and proving that they have not given up on the idea of making it into the playoffs. The 4-3 Panthers are ranked 2nd in the NFC South, behind the 6-1 New Orleans Saints. Both, the Panthers and the Saints are 4-1 in their last five games. Third down conversions will once again be the Panthers' key to victory.  The Panthers' offense...
