Well, this was pretty hilarious. Or awkward. Or both. Anyway, I wanted to ask Patriots coach Bill Belichick about his classic press conference from a decade ago, when he announced he was resigning as HC of NYJ. This one. And what transpired wasn’t quite what I had in mind. And yes, I think Belichick cracked a smile because of it. Shoot, I had to stop myself from laughing. In the end, I kinda got the answer I sought, but with a lot more ridiculousness thrown in. Oh, and I ended up telling Belichick he was old. As we say on Twitter, #Fail. Check out the give-and-take from the news conference: Me: Was the press conference in 1999 when you resigned as Jets head coach the strangest press conference you have ever done? You were a lot younger – (more…)

Bill Belichick Among the Most Hated and Loved NFL Coaches

Belichick is either loved or hated in the NFL.The Sporting News sent out midseason poll questions to NFL players on various topics, from Commissar Goodell to who the top rookie is thus far. Two questions that caught my eye were, “Which coach would you least like to play for?,” and, “Which coach (other than your own) would you most like to play for?” In both questions, players...

Bill Belichick Most Polarizing Head Coach to Play For, According to NFL Players

You would think that after all of his success, Bill Belichick would be a favorite coach of many NFL players. And you would be right. But despite those Super Bowl rings he wears, Belichick has also earned himself a reputation as one of the least desirable coaches to play for. Belichick received the third-most votes from NFL players when asked which coach they would most like to play...

Bill Belichick Expresses No Regret for Decision to Resign as Jets Head Coach in 2000

FOXBORO, Mass. -- Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said Friday he doesn't have "any regrets" with resigning from the Jets in 2000, though he admitted that things probably could have gone down a little differently. Belichick was the Jets' assistant head coach from 1997-99, and he was lined up to succeed Bill Parcells when the legendary coach was ready to step down...

Why the Jets want the Patriots to run, learning the fine rules… and links!

A few random things before we get to what we wrote about today… – The Patriots have talked about being balanced this week, even while coach Bill Belichick said, “The most important thing is to make the plays you need to make to win.” Still, just like last time, they want to run the ball at Gang Green. That, it seems, is what the Jets want. “We’ve always gone into it thinking...

Rex says Belichick is “more normal” away from football

In an entertaining sit-down with Bob Costas of NBC’s Football Night in America, Jets coach Rex Ryan offers up, with his typically colorful choice of words, an assessment of Patriots coach Bill Belichick. “The funny thing about Belichick is, he’s a great guy and he’s funny,” Ryan tells Costas.  “He’s somebody you’d like to drink…

Injured safety Patrick Chung suits up for practice as Pats inch closer to next round of Border War

There was some positive news for the Patriots as they practiced one more time at Gillette in advance of Sunday night’s showdown with the Jets at Met Life stadium. According to colleague Ian Rapoport, who made the trek to the upper grass fields, safety Patrick Chung, who had not practiced all week with a foot injury, was out on the field. According to Rapoport, Chung spent a good...

Rex’s crew confident for win by knockout

There is no weigh-in today, no Rex Ryan and Bill Belichick stepping on the scales in their skivvies flexing their muscles, standing nose to nose, cameras flashing. But Jets-Patriots tomorrow night is the heavyweight championship of the AFC East anyway. And Ryan -- forever the Gaseous Cassius of NFL head...

Rodney Harrison Rips Albert Haynesworth for Quitting, Faking Injuries

Bill Belichick and the Patriots thought they might be able to resurrect Albert Haynesworth’s career.  They were wrong.  Once considered to be the most dominant defensive lineman in the game, Haynesworth has become a disgrace.  He signed a record-breaking free agent contract in 2009 only to collect his guaranteed money and throw in the towel [...]

Jets Week An Afterthought

The Patriots and Jets renew their intense rivalry this Sunday night, but with the Penn State scandal (which just seems to be getting worse and worse every day) and the release of Albert Haynesworth, the game has been pretty much an afterthought when it comes to sports talk this week. Patriots articles this morning pretty much fall into three camps – rehashing Bill Belichick...

Patriots Safety Chung ‘Working to Play’

Could starting Safety Patrick Chung be unable to play Sunday for the Patriots?  While he’s on the record as saying he’s ‘working to play’ it could be that he won’t be able to go.  According to ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss he wasn’t in practice much of the week, and only saw some limited time on the field Friday. The question comes to mind when considering what life might...
