The Arizona Cardinals spent the past week, like most teams in the NFL, scrambling to put together visits, meetings, and new contracts. There were offers to re-sign current free agents, and there were free agents like Karlos Dansby who found new homes. The biggest of the new names were left tackle Jared Veldheer and wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. The team has visited with cornerback Antonio Cromartie, but they have not been able to agree on a deal just.
So what’s left for the Cardinals to do before the majority of their attention returns to the upcoming draft?
The visit by Cromartie shows that the Cardinals are working on filling some holes in the secondary. Adding depth at corner and safety is a priority for the team this offseason. They definitely need to bring in some help at safety. Most of the big name safeties went very quickly once free agency was underway. The only upper echelon free agent safety left is Chris Clemons from the Dolphins. The Cardinals should give his agent a call.
If the team can’t land Clemons or Cromartie then they could potentially take a look at several of the veterans on the market that could help them in the short term. Players like Champ Bailey, Major Wright, Charles Woodson, Ed Reed and Brandon Meriweather are just a few of the well-known names that could be available for a short term rental to add some depth and experience to the Cardinals secondary.
There is also the matter of filling in the rest of the offensive line. Free agent right tackle Eric Winston hasn’t exactly had his door beaten down with offers. Now would be a good time to lock him up to a two-year deal to secure the proper protection for Carson Palmer next season.
Beyond those key areas, the Cardinals will most likely be patient and wait until after the draft to see what holes remain. The Cardinals are in a good position heading into the draft because they don’t have any glaring needs. They will be in the envious position of being able to truly draft the best player on the board. Afterwards the team will still have some wiggle room available to be able to shop from the remaining free agent values.
