Cleveland sports fans are waiting. Thus, while we’re all waiting, the WFNY editors thought you might enjoy reading. Because you never know how long we might be waiting. So here are assorted reading goodies for you to enjoy. Send more good links for tomorrow’s edition to tips@waitingfornextyear.com Ha. “Jim Tressel’s Least Favorite Moment of the game- After a long morning of apple picking, Tressel returned home just in time to catch the opening kickoff of his beloved former football team. He was enjoying a tall glass of cider and a crisp Ohio McIntosh late in the second quarter, when the Ohio State offense lined up on fourth-and-10 at the Iowa 29. “Are you kiddin’ me?” Tressel asked Ellen when Evan Spencer couldn’t hang onto the ball after hitting the ground in the end zone. “That’s only a 47-yarder there, Coach. Drew Basil could hit that in his sleep.” Then Tressel caught a whiff of apple pie wafting in from the kitchen and relaxed. This would be a good day.” [Citro/Eleven Warriors] —- “So about that Chip Kelly revolution… An offense, hailed at the beginning of the season as transcendent, had trouble transcending midfield on Sunday, piling up three points in a 17-3 home loss to a 4-3 Cowboys team that isn’t known for its defense. That’s nine straight home defeats for Philadelphia dating back to last season. Mike Vick is hurt and backup Nick Foles followed him to the injured list on Sunday, yet this isn’t the juggernaut many believed would bring NFL defenses to their knees. The Eagles’ fast-paced offense came into Sunday with 409 total plays from scrimmage, good for ninth in the league – two behind the Cleveland Browns. The Eagles’ points per game ranked a strong fifth, but that was two spots behind the Cowboys, who took sole possession of first place in the NFC East on Sunday.” [Adelson/Yahoo] —- “The Indians were 50-20 when Pestano appeared in a game. He recorded a strikeout in each of his first 21 appearances, which was the longest such streak by an Indians reliever to start a season since 1918. From late June until the middle of August, he threw 21 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Only once throughout the entire season did he allow runs to score in back-to-back appearances. One of the common things discussed throughout this season was the decline of Pestano’s fastball. It was frequently noted that his velocity was not quite what it once was. According to the statistics at Fangraphs.com, Pestano’s velocity on his fastball was down from an average of 93 miles per hour and a maximum of 95.1 in his rookie season to an average of 91.1 MPH with a maximum of 93.8 this year. The opponent’s batting average against his fastball has climbed from .162 in 2011 to .225 in 2012 to .271 this season.” [Toth/DTTWLN] —- “So, it’s come to this. As Paul said on Friday, “Pinktober reached its inevitable apotheosis (or nadir) yesterday, as Oregon announced that it will be wearing pink helmets, socks and gloves this weekend.” The previews were bad enough. The real thing, as you can see above — is worse. It’s a good thing they didn’t over do it.” [Hecken/Uni Watch]
