Former New England Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest spoke his mind on NFL Total Access on Tuesday by letting everyone know what he thinks about Wes Welker holding out and not attending the Patriots voluntary workouts.

“I just don’t like the diva attitude,” said McGinest, per WEEI in Boston. “Let’s keep it real: Prior to the Patriots, this is a guy who played three years, had 96 receptions, never had a 1,000-yard season.

“This $9 million-plus that they’re offering is half of his last contract. That’s a lot of money. Let’s not forget that they signed Brandon Lloyd, they signed (Anthony Gonzalez), they signed (Deion) Branch back, they got the two tight ends; they have weapons on that offense. So look, Wes, it’s time to take off the leopard-printed cowboy boots, get off the party tour and get back to work.”

McGinest is essentially saying Welker is a system player and if it wasn’t for Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the Patriots offense, he would be a nobody.  I can’t really argue with that point.  But I thought former and current NFL players understand it when a player is looking to cash in, since the average career in the NFL is roughly less than four years.

Report: Bills like Michael Brockers

  • This is the same guy that dropped a ball, that hit him in the hands, in the Superbowl, that would have given the a first down inside the 20 with the game on the line, correct???
Yep, I thought so. Sign and play welker. If you aren't in the Patriot system you are just another undersized sub.
  • When Tom Brady went down, Welker still led the league in receptions with Matt Cassel at quarterback. No doubt Brady makes Welker better, but Wes has a little something to do with it too.
  • So what if he is a diva ... what if he isnt .. he plays a game where everyone else is twice his size and he DOES HIS JOB ... system or not > HE DOES HIS JOB ...
  • Call him whatever you want,Willie! He's the greatest slot receiver,BAR NONE!
  • easy now, you don't want to get a hernia.
  • Why the hernia, what he said was true.
  • Wes is lucky the Pats picked him up after Miami gave up on him. There is no loyalty in sports, but remember, Wes, you wouldn't have a job if it weren't for the boys from NE.
  • Miami never used Wes the way they should have. Wes didn't magically get better at receiver coming to the Pats. They just actually threw him the ball in Miami. Every play the dolphins ran was throwing to another receiver that was double covered. The dolphins never knew what they had in Welker. It's their loss and the Pats gain.
  • Coming from the guy who left a great system at its peak to go play for Cleveland and has done what since?

PS I bet Miami wish he never left.
  • 3, you're right! we in miami wished he never left!
  • Willie WHO ??????????
Seriously, NONE of your business !
  • Wes is the exact opposite of a diva WR. He makes plays up the middle, makes catches in heavy traffic, and routinely takes huge hits from guys twice his size for his trouble. On a per catch basis, he has been absurdly underpaid for his entire career with the Pats. Now he's not asking anyone to make up the difference. He just wants to be honored with a market rate contract. The man has more than earned it. The Pats are famous for being tight with payroll. For the most part, it has served them well, but this is one instance where frugal starts to look tight-fisted awfully fast.
  • Bet if Mr. Welker were black, Mr. McGinest wouldn't be talking this way.
  • It's funny how that same thought crossed my mind also :)
  • Really? He was nothing before he came to the Pats. The guy who still holds the NCAA record for punt return TDs. The guy who had the 2nd most all purpose yards in his first three years at Miami in all of NFL history? You can call him a system player all you want. The fact remains, he holds almost all of the Pats records in receiving and is the ONLY player in NFL history to have 110 catches in three straight seasons. He has been selected to play in the ProBowl EVERY SINGLE season he has played in New England. Now because he doesn't want half his salary taken away, he's not a team player. You could always go back to Randy Moss. How did that work out for ya? Remember Fred Biletnikoff? He wan't your prototype receiver either. Think the Raiders would have traded him? This isn't the first time in NFL history a player wanted more money. Many couldn't carry Welker;s jock. So what if he dropped a pass in the big game. Is Bill Buckner a sorry player because one rolled under his feet? Is Jim Marshall sorry because he ran the wrong way?
  • and look, he's on the juice too.........
  • Since Wes became a Pat, he has 80 more catches than any other receiver in the NFL. 80. And one of those years Matt Cassel was throwing him the ball. He deserves to be paid, and the Pats system benefits everyone, not just Wes.
  • McGinest is 100% correct. Welker only has success because of the slot. Put him on the outside like a real receiver going against CB’s and not LB’s and he’d have 30 catches a year. I mean, his big move is to jerk his head to the right and run left lol. Product of the slot… mediocre at best.
  • Willie McGinest is a nobody....sounds like he's a little jealous because Welker has made a name for himself and wants to cash in, he would do the same thing so I really don't want to hear him complain about Welker. Tom Brady is going to help out any WR (except maybe ocho-cinco)but calling Welker a diva is flat out dumb, watch the guy play - he gives 110%, so he dropped one pass in the super bowl....he's human. Hopefully the Pats don't sign him and he ends up in St. Louis, we could use a GOOD reciever.

Willie McGinest says Wes Welker needs to stop acting like a diva

While some may handle it better than others, no NFL player likes being hit with the franchise tag. They want long-term security, and in many ways we can’t blame them for that. On Tuesday, Welker said he is likely...

New England Patriots: most interesting team in 2012 NFL Draft?

Doesn’t it seem like the New England Patriots go out of their way EVERY season to trade down and acquire more picks? Every year, they’re a fun team to watch on draft day, because they always seem to end up with more picks than anyone else. In 2012, even more so, because they have four picks in the first two rounds. And even though they were just one Wes Welker drop, or perhaps...
