We know a lot about our favorite athletes on the field. Their stats and bios are easily googled and we read about their on-field accomplishments often. But how much do we really know about them personally? Since we’re curious, we’ve asked our favorite athletes to tell us 10 things that we don’t know about them. Today we check in with the Capitals’ Jeff Halpern, who has decided to boycott a certain reality talent show. 10 Things You Don’t Know About Me, Jeff Halpern 1. I love golf, reading, watching movies and hiking. My favorite book recently was Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. 2. When I was a kid I lost my schoolbook, so at the end of the year I tried to cross out someone else’s name on the list and put mine in. I didn’t know that the teachers kept track of the serial numbers on the book so I got caught. My parents were not happy. 3. My everyday uniform is pajamas or shorts and a t-shirt. 4. I love Ireland. I went on a soccer trip there and soccer in Ireland is really physical...

Capitals GM: D Green to rejoin team on Saturday

Washington Capitals general manager George McPhee declared that stud defenseman Mike Green is expected to rejoin the team for Saturday's game against the Colorado Avalanche. Green has been sidelined since Nov. 11 with a nagging groin injury. "It's longer than we expected, unfortunately, but it was a significant injury," McPhee told the Washington Post on Wednesday...

A Night to Forget

For the Caps fans who stayed till the end of Tuesday’s 5-1 blowout loss and gave a standing ovation when their team finally scored late in the third, defenseman Karl Alzner noticed. And he appreciated it. “I noticed it right away,” he said. “I thought that was nice they were still cheering, even though what the score was.” But after a loss like last night’s to the Flyers...

Is Braden Holtby next in line for Capitals?

The axiom goes that the most popular player on a losing football team is often the backup quarterback, as fans clamor for some kind of shake-up. The backup goalie often fits that role in hockey, but with Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth both struggling for the Washington Capitals, the popular ...

Our five favorite moments from 24/7, Episode 1

Even watching 24/7 last year it was hard not to gain respect for some of the Washington Capitals. So, about ten minutes into the show, when we found ourselves completely respecting both teams we knew it was going to be something special. We briefly thought about running a Rangers blog.   24/7 was mind-blowing last year. This year it is just as memorizing. One of the...

Practice: Dec. 14

The Washington Capitals were on ice on Wednesday morning as they attempt to regroup following another hammering at the hands of a contender.  Some updates from Kettler Capitals Iceplex: Every Cap, except Mike Green, was on the ice and accounted for at the skate.  Green is still visiting a groin specialist in Canada, and is expected to join the team on the road.  The lines for...

No Avalanche practice today, Capitals going with Neuvirth in net, Hendricks to return

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Avalanche flew home late last night after its 5-4 loss against the Sharks and isn’t scheduled to practice today. Thus, we probably won’t know if Semyon Varlamov or J.S. Giguere will start in goal against the Washington Capitals on Saturday night at the Pepsi Center until after the morning skate. Varlamov, of course, was acquired from Washington for a...

Status of Capitals' Mike Green still unclear

Washington Capitals General Manager George McPhee didn't reveal a lot about Mike Green's whereabouts. He did make reference to Matt Lauer and the old "Today" show segment "Where in the World Is Matt Lauer?" Where in the world is Green? McPhee said the All-Star defenseman will join the Caps in ...

Claude Noel Is Extremely Mad

Alex Ovechkin scored very late in the game to give the Caps a 1-0 victory. Jets coach Claude Noel’s media conference post-game had a feel of a college lecture than the normal press conference we are used to.

DALY: We've seen this lifeless look from the Capitals

ANALYSIS/OPINION After two games of flirting with competence, the Washington Capitals jumped back on the teeter-totter Tuesday night. The Philadelphia Flyers, flattened by the Caps on their home ice back in October, returned the favor at Verizon Center, 5-1. By the time Caps finally scored, Michal Neuvirth had replaced Tomas ...

Vokoun has 'terrible performance' vs. Flyers

Tomas Vokoun didn't really know what else to say. Four goals on 21 shots, including two soft ones that played a major part in the Washington Capitals' 5-1 loss Tuesday night to the Philadelphia Flyers. "It was terrible performance. Certainly not pleasant and it's unfortunate in a game like that," ...

Michal Neuvirth rewarded for shutout with start against Avalanche on Saturday

DENVER — Tomas Vokoun was understandably frustrated about his game earlier this week following a rough performance — four goals on 21 shots — against the Philadelphia Flyers. The veteran Washington Capitals goaltender said he knows himself pretty well — and that getting right back between the pipes to atone ...

Ovechkin, Neuvirth help Capitals edge Jets

Alex Ovechkin scored with 1:14 left, and Michal Neuvirth made 26 saves for his first shutout of the season in the Washington Capitals' 1-0 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday night.

Whew....a 2-point night

After that abomination of a game against the Flyers the other night (which, thankfully, I couldn't watch), long-time Caps fans began wondering.  Is this team just awful?  Will they ever be able to get it together, even under new coach Dale Hunter?  It seems like every season Caps teams are lacking in one way or the other - lack of talent, lack of heart or lack of coaching...
