Today, we will take a closer look at center Frederik Gauthier.   Source: Center Frederik Gauthier, Rimouski (QMJHL), 18 years old Height: 6’4″, Weight:  214 pounds, Shoots: Left RANKED: NHL Central Scouting: 8th among North American skaters TSN: 21st among all players 2012-13 Stats: 62 games played, 22 goals, 38 assists, 60 points, +22, 26 penalty minutes   THE SCOOP: Another young center from Rimouski is coming to the NHL just like Sidney Crosby did in 2005. Althougj his style and numbers are not close to Crosby’s at all, Frederik Gauthier will be an effective player in the NHL someday. His rookie year with Rimouski of the QMJHL was a very memorable one as Gauthier registered 60 points in 62 games. That point total earned him a spot on the QMJHL all-rookie team and caught the eyes of many scouts. Although he is only 18 years old, Gauthier is a big player who is hard to bring down. He is another player who could develop into a great power forward in the NHL. In fact, Gauthier’s favorite player is former Penguin Jordan Staal and his style is very similar to Staal’s. Gauthier wins many puck battles and has the ability to set up his teammates or go hard to the net and score goals with his accurate shot. For a big guy, Gauthier can skate very well and his agility is one of his best qualities when it comes to his skating. Defensively, he is similar to Staal as well. Gauthier was a finalist for the best defensive forward award in the QMJHL this past season and it was well deserved. He won his team a good amount of face-offs and always backchecks hard. Some scouts would like to see him be more physical, but Gauthier is always using his vision to read the play effectively. Here is what International Scouting Services had to say about Gauthier: “A very smart and hard working kid, Gauthier is a solid team player who does whatever is asked of him with pride and determination. He has very good speed and intimidates his opponents with his speed and size. Another advantage is he has a strong work ethic and good defensive habits at a young age. He plays such a solid consistent game 5 on 5 that he should be able to translate that into the pro ranks. Particularly effective when used on the penalty kill where his speed and hockey sense can lead to unexpected offensive opportunities. Can play either a skilled game or a hard-nosed physical game. Has surprising acceleration and ability to change speeds for such a big kid.” The Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets will both likely have interest in Gauthier, but it will be interesting to see where he goes because his draft stock went way up after this season. Two-way centers are very valuable in the NHL and Gauthier could find himself matching up against the best players in the league as a first or second line center someday. Ray Shero and the Pens "All in" with Crosby, Malkin, and Bylsma is all about making choices and taking risks; just like in business, and in poker. Pittsburgh Penguins general manager and 2013 NHL GM of the year winner Ray Shero has just put all of his cards on the table and has gone "All in" with three different guys. With the Penguins coming off of their fourth straight postseason ending in disappointing fashion...
