Obviously this isn't the complete history of the two teams playing against one another, but here are some key moments in Penguins/Islanders history.
That video pretty much explains the situation. The Islanders came back from a 0-3 hole to eliminate the Penguins.
The Pens were pretty much annihilated by the Islanders in the first two games of their 1982 series. The Islanders won game one 8-0 and game two 7-2 before the Penguins decided to make things competitive. The Islanders won the series 3-2 and they went on to win the Stanley Cup for the third time in-a-row.
You probably already know what happened. If not, we go more in depth here.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have never defeated the New York Islanders in a playoff series.
Now, for some more recent history.

Al Arbour returns to coach his 1500 game with the Islanders. The Islanders won 3-2.

Sidney Crosby worked out with the Penguins conditioning coach and left the ice before the Penguins started their practice this morning. Odds are Crosby will not be playing tonight. Coach Bylsma usually has the players attend the regular practice if they are playing, though he could make an exception for Crosby.
While it is up in the air whether he will be in the lineup for the...
Sidney Crosby will visit a doctor on Tuesday to confirm whether or not he his clear to play in Game 1 of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Eastern COnference Quarterfinal series against the New York Islanders.
Crosby told Josh Yohe of McKeesport Daily
The New York Islanders have called up Johan Sundstrom from their farm system Sunday to several other players including Brock Nelson, Matt Donovan, John Persson, Aaron Ness, Anders Nilsson and Calvin de Haan. All will be representing the Black Aces squad.

Pittsburgh Penguins Captain Sidney Crosby will miss game one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs tonight. Crosby, who took a puck to the face in late March, was sidelined throughout the month of April. Though he has been cleared to practice with the team, he needs an additional clearance for game play. The rest of the [...]
I am a die-hard New York Islanders fan and have been waiting for this for 7 years. I sat in the Stanley Cup when I was 3 years old and have bled blue and orange ever since. We are no longer the laughingstock of the NHL and Rick DiPetro is not on the roster. So there will be no need for those kind of jokes anymore.
The New York Islanders shocked everyone covering the NHL this...
And so it starts.
As we near the beginning of another year of NHL Playoffs with the Penguins facing the Islanders, many of the prognosticators list the Penguins as a strong contender, if not favorite, to win the Stanley Cup.
It's certainly not an outlandish prediction: The Pens went 36-12 in this shortened regular season, not to mention GM Ray Shero bolstering an already...
Wednesday night the top seed in the east, the Pittsburgh Penguins face off in their opening round series against the #8 seed New York Islanders. There is a bit of history between these two teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins completely and utterly dominated the New York Islanders in game one of their Stanley Cup Playoff series, winning 5-0. Beau Bennett got things started early on the power play less than five minutes into the game by beating Evgeni Nabokov with this ridiculous shot. Nabokov had literally no chance, this is one of the most perfect shots I’ve ever seen. To...
Sidney Crosby is still waiting for doctors to tell him his broken jaw has healed enough to allow him to play.
With or without their dynamic captain, the Pittsburgh Penguins are under pressure heading into the opening round of the NHL playoffs. Pittsburgh is the top team in the Eastern Conference and on Wednesday faces the surging New York Islanders.
Crosby broke his jaw a month...
The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of the most-watched teams in America. While the previous sentence might sound like some form of nonsensical gloating you might hear from a sports fan, it's actually pretty accurate according to a recent article from Sports Business Daily.
The report states that prior to their final few games of 2013 the Penguins were on pace to post the highest...
Eastern Conference 1. Pittsburgh Penguins vs. 8. New York Islanders Finally the Islanders have made the playoffs. It seems after years and years of high draft picks, they have finally paid off. Led by John Tavares, the Islanders are going to have a tough time in their return to the playoffs. The Penguins are led more »
From Sports Business Daily's John Ourand,
Are this year’s Pittsburgh Penguins about to join the ranks of the most-watched American sports teams?
Heading into their final regular-season games last week, the Penguins were on pace to post the highest average RSN rating for any U.S.-based MLB, NBA or NHL team since 2002. Penguins games on Root Sports were averaging a 12...
What a difference a year makes. The Penguins got out to a 3-0 lead and, instead of losing in overtime as they did in Game 1 last year agains the Flyers, they added two more goals and defeated the New York Islanders 5-0 to take a 1-0 series lead. The shoddy defense and poor goaltending that led to the demise of the Penguins cup run last year was nonexistent. The Penguins shutout the...

This could be the most unnecessary event that we'll ever watch with great intensity.
