The Edmonton Oilers, who previously named Andrew Ference as their captain, has announced today via Twitter that they have named six players as alternate captains for the upcoming season. For those of you who are wondering, this is not a typo. The alternate captains are Jordan Eberle, Sam Gagner, Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nick Schultz, and Ryan Smyth. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was named one of six alternate captains earlier today. This is a very unique system, and very confusing at the same time. Each team may only have two alternate captains per game (three if the captain isn’t dressed). This is going to lead to interesting scenarios on how the alternates will take turns as physically having the “A” on their jersey. I’m speculating that it may be a game-by-game decision as to who deserves to wear the “A” for the game at hand, unless they have a calendar already written out for who will wear the “A” on each game. What pressure does this put on the alternates? This can work in Dallas Eakin’s favor (Head Coach of the Oilers) by instilling competition for all six of the alternates to try and become more of leaders in practices, games, and in the dressing rooms. This could also have a negative effect if the amount of leadership becomes overwhelming for the hockey club. This is a scenario that players haven’t experienced yet. The closest to this could arguably be during the Olympics where the locker room could be filled with captains from several other NHL teams, although the Olympics are far shorter than an NHL season. Concerns about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has had a disappointing NHL career thus far, and several NHL critics were shocked at the decision to name Nugent-Hopkins as an alternate captain. Based off of his history of not being able to compete for a complete NHL season, there may have been better alternatives such as Ales Hemsky who has been in the organization for a decade. Andrew Ference’s impact Recent acquisition, Andrew Ference, was named the Oilers’ new captain last week. Andrew Ference was expected to bring leadership and experience to the Edmonton Oilers’ locker room. I think it is safe to say that although the Oilers were looking for a captain, no one was expecting Ference to come in and become the captain in his first year with the organization. Ference brings the recent playoff experience that is crucial for the Oilers. What Ference didn’t have was the personal friendships with the other Oilers players. This may have set him up for immediate success, however. If he was able to enter the locker room as more of an acquaintance rather than friend, he may have stood out as a leader to Dallas Eakins and the rest of the coaching staff. Watch the Edmonton Oilers tonight against the Winnipeg Jets. Puck drops at 8:00PM (MST).

EDMONTON, Alberta — The Edmonton Oilers chose defenseman Andrew Ference their new team captain on Sunday, making him the 14th in franchise history. The 34-year-old Ference is entering his 14th NHL season and his first with the Oilers. Drafted in the eighth round of the 1997 draft, Ference has 37 goals, 156 assists and 645 penalty minutes in 760 career games. The Edmonton native...

Boston still has love for Ference

photo via www.stamfordadvocate.comWhen Andrew Ference left the Bruins this offseason for the Edmonton Oilers, it was bitter sweet for him. He left a city where he was not only a fan favorite on the ice, but also off the ice, oftentimes seen riding his bike to Bruins practices, games, and always getting involved in the community. But he left for his hometown Oilers, a team he grew...

New and improved Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers are heading into the season with a lot of familiar faces. Yet it's the new guys who may make the difference between a playoff berth and another early golf season. General manager Craig MacTavish went about trying to supplement his roster this off-season looking to provide support to his young up-and-coming stars. He gained secondary scoring by trading for...

Eakins liked forward Jesse Joensuu's tough play in home opener

Jesse Joensuu was happy with the effort but disappointed in the loss. The Edmonton Oilers winger had an impressive debut for his new team scoring a goal in a 5-4 loss to the Winnipeg Jets. “It’s tough to lose” Joensuu said. “I’m happy that I played but it’s tough to lose it’s really frustrating.” Joensuu was one of the Oilers’ better forwards on the night playing...

There may some questions about the Oilers roster, but Devan Dubnyk isn't one of them

To the Nattering Nabobs of Negativism of which I’m an occasional member this makes no sense. The Edmonton Oilers have gone from 33-to-1 on June 25 to 25-to-1 on Sept. 1 to 20-to-1 to win the Stanley Cup on the eve of the NHL season. The Oilers will start the season with a 37-year-old who looked like he was pretty much done last year playing on the first line. They have...

Now awaits the execution of Oilers coach Dallas Eakins’ plan for success

First-year head coach Dallas Eakins trots through life to his own double-time cadence and carrying his own clean slate which is precisely how the Oilers want it. This being Edmonton a sort of hockey Brigadoon where the 1980s glory days live forever Oilers Standard Time can take over which is understandable. On Monday for example while the all-business Eakins put his club through...

After signing with the Oilers two months ago as a free agent, Andrew Ference has been named the 14th captain in franchise history. While Edmonton is certainly happy with the 34-year-old leading their young team, Ference’s former club is also glad to hear the news. Jets-Oilers Preview

The Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets own the NHL's two longest active postseason droughts. They hope their first seasons in different divisions will help bring them better fortune. The Winnipeg Jets Storm Back to Defeat Their New Division Rival Edmonton Oilers 5-4

In the season preview, we could’ve expected both teams to be fun to watch and score a lot of goals, that’s what we saw tonight in Edmonton. The Oilers were without C’s Sam Gagner, and star franchise forward Ryan Nugent Hopkins. So in a de-facto sort of way, Taylor Hall had to be 1st line […]

David Krejci Named Bruins Alternate Captain, Will Alternate Wearing ‘A’ With Chris Kelly

The departure of Andrew Ference from the Bruins left a void in a few places. It left a hole in the Bruins’ defensive corps, and it’s also expected to be a hit on the team’s dressing room atmosphere. It also left the B’s down an alternate captain. Zdeno Chara, of course, wears the “C” as the team’s captain. One of the two alternate captain “A” patches goes to Patrice...

A bunch of Canadian teams and the Wings. Atlantic Division Preview.

Atlantic Division is going to be so bizarre this season. There are four teams within like eight minutes of each other. Then there are two teams in Florida. (In order of predicted finish) 1.  Detroit Red Wings The Red Wings are a new addition to the Eastern Conference and will be a thorn in the side of every team.  You can almost guarantee one playoff spot will...
