“We’re averaging 1.7 (goals) against at home, and we’re averaging 2.8 on the road. You can’t win without checking. It’s impossible. It doesn’t work like that.
“You can’t outscore your mistakes. You’ve got to be diligent without the puck if you’re to have success.”
-Mike Babcock, head coach of the Detroit Red Wings. More on the Wings from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.

For someone who claims to not care about the All-Star Game, ESPN’s Scott Burnside joined the Ottawa Citizen’s Ken Warren by launching into a scathing criticism of the NHL’s decision to allow Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom and Anaheim Ducks forward Teemu Selanne to skip the All-Star weekend…

The Detroit Red Wings’ 3-2 shootout victory over the Phoenix Coyotes, I daresay, kinda played out the way I thought it would: the Wings were just sloppy enough—and their power play was bad enough, going a hideous 0-for-5 in 10 minutes of PP time—to give the Coyotes both the first goal and a game-tying goal directly after Gilbert Brule got out of the penalty box, and in between...
DET (30-15-1) are in PHX (21-9-7) tonight looking to win consecutive road games for the 1st time in six weeks. Road defense plagues DET, they have allowed 69 goals on the road - nearly double the 36 yielded at home.
The Wings 30 victories lead the NHL, yet they find themselves 4th in the West, second in the Central.
The Dogs were pounded by ANA last night, 6-2. PHX have dropped...
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Todd Bertuzzi scored in regulation, then spun in front of the net and made a spectacular backhand shot in a shootout and the Detroit Red Wings won their fifth in a row to take the NHL overall lead, beating the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday night.

After an eventful three game stretch over four days which saw the Red Wings win in overtime, in a blowout and via the shootout last night in Dallas vs. the Stars, Detroit suddenly finds themselves once again atop the Western Conference standings, albeit possibly for a very short time given Chicago's home contest tonight vs. the Buffalo Sabres.
Nevertheless, last night'...

American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas
Here we go again. Second night of a back-to-back with a tough team coming to town. The Stars' difficulties on these situations is well documented this year. Dallas is 0-6-0 in games like this so far on the year and have been outscored 24...
The Red Wings fell into the same old pattern as usual on the road Tuesday.
Jiri Hudler scored in the second round of the shootout, Detroit's Ty Conklin was perfect in all three rounds, and the Red Wings beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Tuesday night. Hudler put on a nifty move to fake rookie Richard Bachman out of position and tucked the puck into the right side of the net.
Riding a team-record 15-game home winning streak, the Red Wings have risen to challenge the new No. 1 atop Adrian Dater's Power Rankings. Last year's darling, alas, is now 30th.
"You got to play good without the puck if you're going to be successful. Then you have the puck all the time and you have lots of offense. We've been able to do that at home and committed to doing that. We haven't been on the road." --Mike BabcockThat quote comes to us via Khan(!)...I hope that if Khan(!) even knows about this site, he doesn't hate us...
