The NHL season is only a week old, but it's already apparent that this is going to be a very different campaign than recent years. Brendan Shanahan is now on the beat as the league's top cop, and he hasn't been shy about exerting his new power. In the preseason alone, Shanahan handed out nine suspensions totaling 28 preseason and 32 regular-season games. He added another controversial two-game ban to Minnesota's Pierre-Marc Bouchard for a high-sticking incident over the weekend. It's all part of the league's effort to improve player safety (hence Shanahan's new title of executive vice president of...

Brendan Shanahan has turned a few heads with his heavy-handed ways as the NHL's new head disciplinarian. His focus on safety has received mostly positive reviews, though. NESN's Dale Arnold, Barry Pederson and Billy Jaffe discussed Shanahan's tenure thus far, during which the former NHL pro has issued a number of suspensions because of illegal hits. Pederson said that...
The Bruins' season hasn't started the way the defending Stanley Cup champions had expected. The B's enter Saturday's game in Chicago owners of just a 1-3 record, as they have come out with uninspired efforts far too often. Perhaps the Bruins would be best-suited to up their level of physical play to try and provide a spark going forward. The B's will enter Saturday...

So far the New Jersey Devils have shown a lot of promise early on in the season but Devils fans shouldn’t be done holding their breath just yet. After making a few observations about the team’s play, I was fortunate enough to get some valuable input from my fellow Hockey Guy colleague Todd Cordell on the team’s...
