The Colorado Avalanche are very much in the mix for a playoff spot, but they may need to improve their play quickly to stay there. Getting a better result against the last-place Edmonton Oilers would certainly help. Colorado looks to avoid a third straight loss overall and fourth in five meetings with Edmonton this season when the teams meet at Rexall Place on Friday night. The Avalanche (28-26-4) are in the thick of the race for one of the Western Conference's final postseason berths, but their recent struggles haven't helped matters. They have gone 2-5-2 in their last nine while Calgary and Phoenix, two teams they are battling for positioning, have picked up their play in recent weeks. The Avs looked to be coming out of their slump with back-to-back wins last week that followed a four-game skid, but they've since dropped two in a row.
