In the 11th game of the season, the Avalanche finally had to face an uphill battle entering the third period. The Avs, who had either led or were tied after two periods in their previous 10 games, trailed the visiting Winnipeg Jets after 40 minutes Sunday night and were hoping to take advantage of the Jets' shootout victory in Dallas the previous night.
Mission accomplished. The Avs got goals from Jan Hejda and Paul Stastny to triumph 3-2 and improve to 10-1, the best start in Quebec/Colorado franchise history. The 1994-95 Nordiques began 9-1 in 1994-95, a year before they became the Avs.
Stastny broke a 2-2 with 5:28 remaining in regulation, scoring back-door off a pass from Gabe Landeskog. Hejda tied it at 2-2 at 7:13 of the third with a monstrous slap shot from the left circle and, couple minutes later, Colorado had produced 13 of the third-period's 18 shots and were buzzing in front of goalie Al Montoya's net.
