amie Benn admits he’s not much of a talker. He can be funny at times engaging at times self-deprecating at times. But he does it quietly. He’s likely not going to yell much or crack the whip on his teammates. “You guys miss all of my good speeches” he joked. “They’re always in the locker room.” The Stars on Thursday named Benn the new captain of the team. He is going to have to amp up the talking but many feel he already knows how to lead. “I think you saw that (Wednesday) night” said Ray Whitney who along with Stephane Robidas was named an alternate captain. “He wasn’t happy with how he played the first (exhibition) game and you could tell he wanted to prove himself. He was by far the best player on the ice and that’s what this organization is going to need.” Benn took a flat scoreless game and turned it in the Stars’ favor with a couple of electric plays including a nice goal off a blazing wrister. When Florida rallied and tied the game at 2-2 Benn stepped up again creating two great scoring chances in overtime before contributing one of the two shootout goals that won the game. “I definitely think that’s the best way to lead. That’s where I’m comfortable just playing hard and trying to make a key play” Benn said. “When things aren’t going so well I want to change momentum. If that means a fight or a goal I’m willing to do that. Whatever it takes I want to help our team win games.” Benn is the sixth captain of the team since it moved to Dallas in 1993 and takes over for Brenden Morrow another soft-spoken player who liked to speak with his play. In fact Benn pretty much fits the prototype of a Stars captain. Mark Tinordi Neal Broten Derian Hatcher Mike Modano and Morrow all were quiet guys. They all were top players who would pull instead of push. “In the NHL the most successful teams don’t have just one leader” Benn said. “We saw with Derian Hatcher and the 1999 Stanley Cup champions you had a room full of other great leaders. When I look at our team now we have a lot of the same things.” Back in the day the Stars had several former captains as well as veteran leaders. This year they have players like Ray Whitney Shawn Horcoff Sergei Gonchar and Stephane Robidas. Whitney and Robidas will provide immediate help with the A’s but the entire team will contribute.
