We’re trying our absolute hardest at The Leafs Nation to avoid mentioning Mitch Marner as much as possible, given that he’s no longer a member of the team and whether you’re in the camp of wanting him out of town or the camp of lamenting that the Toronto Maple Leafs let him go, nobody really has an appetite to reflect on his tenure. But, when you’re doing a series like the Best Leafs goals of the season in order to fill out the dog days of summer, Marner’s name is going to pop up more often than not.
The Leafs came out of the 4 Nations Face-Off break on a heater, winning their first five games after the break, and Marner was a big contributor in these games. Fans were seeing him in a more positive light at the time, despite all of the contract negotiations hanging over the team’s head, because he showed up for Team Canada and assisted on Connor McDavid’s tournament-clinching goal in a final vs. the United States that felt like it mattered more than usual. And, to add icing on the cake, he scored a big overtime-winner in the Leafs’ final game against the Boston Bruins, which itself always means a little more than your standard February regular season game.
After yet another stunning overtime stop by Anthony Stolarz, on what would have been a highlight reel goal for Bruins defender Mason Lohrei, the Leafs managed to flick the puck out of the zone and poke it forward to Marner, who carried the puck in on a breakaway and juked the Bruins’ goaltender out of his shoes to secure the two points for the Maple Leafs. Not only did it secure the win for the Maple Leafs, it clinched them the season series against the Bruins, which was a nice turnaround from getting swept by them in the regular season the year before.
Marner, as you all know by now, is a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, so outside of these top goals pieces, there won’t be too much more reflecting on his tenure in Toronto. That is, until January 23rd.
