Matt Duchene, Paul Stastny and the Colorado Avalanche ended the Chicago Blackhawks’ 24-game points streak. Image Credit: Jacquelyn Martin, AP After 24 games, the Chicago Blackhawks’ record of consecutive games to start a season without a regulation loss has come to an end. After starting the 2013 season 21-0-3, the Blackhawks were defeated by the Colorado Avalanche by a score of 6-2. Chicago took an early lead on a goal from captain Jonathan Toews 5:44 into the game. They held that lead for most of the first period, but Colorado tied it with under four minutes to go on a power-play goal from Paul Stastny. Colorado broke the tie and took the lead for good with a blistering four-goal second period. The Avalanche got two goals in the first five minutes of the second period, as Matt Duchene, who would finish with a team-leading four points (one goal, three assists), notched his ninth of the year at the 4:16 mark. Teammate John Mitchell added his eighth tally of the year 33 seconds later to give the Avs a 3-1 lead. Ryan O’Reilly and Jamie McGinn would add the other two second-period goals for Colorado. Chicago added one goal 8:53 into the third period from Bryan Bickell to close the gap to 5-2, but by then it was too little, too late. Colorado would add a score from P.A Parenteau to regain their four-goal lead with just under five minutes to go, and were able to close out the game from there. Despite the loss, it’s just a drop in the ocean for Chicago. Their incredible streak has given them 45 points in the standings, putting them firmly atop the league standings with a lock on the top seed in the Western Conference. Here’s the Blackhawks’ streak in a nutshell: -They amassed 45 points in the standings, far and away the best total in the league. The next closest team is Anaheim, with 35 points. Ironically, Anaheim was the team that held the old mark of consecutive games with a point to start a season. Back in 2006-07, the Ducks began the year with 16 straight games without a regulation loss. -Right wing Patrick Kane led the team in every major offensive category. His totals in goals (12), assists (15) and points (27) were all team-highs. -Goaltender Ray Emery was a perfect 10-0-0 in his ten starts. -Chicago’s goal differential of +32 was the best in the NHL, as they outscored opponents 78-46. Those 46 goals allowed was the lowest total in the league. -They had 16 different players score a goal for them, and 13 different players score game-winning goals. - Of the 21 skaters who laced up for Chicago during the streak, only two players (left wing Brandon Bollig and defenseman Sheldon Brookbank) failed to record a point. -The streak was ended by Colorado, who entered the game with the third-worst record in the entire NHL.
