BOSTON — Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara won’t be around forever, and the B’s are about to get a quick glimpse of what life without the captain could be like. Chara played in his final game before the Olympic break on Tuesday night as the Bruins beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 at TD Garden. The club has two more games before the league-wide break, but Chara is leaving early to serve as the flag bearer at the opening ceremonies for Slovakia. That puts the Bruins in the position of having to play those two games before the break without one of the best defensive players in the world. Claude Julien’s bunch will have to find a way to make up for the 25:57 average ice time that Chara logs every night. It’s fitting that Chara’s last game before the break showed his importance, as the Boston blue liner logged some heavy minutes against Vancouver’s top line featuring Henrik and Daniel Sedin. Unsurprisingly, that line was kept off the stat sheet Tuesday night, thanks in large part to ano...

Zdeno Chara took an early leave from the Boston Bruins and arrived in Sochi yesterday to help carry the flag for his native Slovakia during the Opening Ceremonies. The 6’9 NHL defenseman wound up running into 4’10 Canadian figure skater Kirsten Moore-Towers, and the pair took a great picture together. Zdeno Chara is at least three Russian Dolls bigger than Kirsten Moore-Towers...

Zdeno Chara’s Bed At Sochi Winter Olympics Comes Up Short (Photo)

There is now a surplus of #Sochi2014 hotel gaffes, and the latest involves Boston’s very own gentle giant. Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara has arrived in Sochi, where he will play for the Slovakia men’s hockey team. Chara said he did not think the hotel accommodations would be “anything bad,” but his opinion might have changed now that he’s arrived at the Winter Olympics...

Sochi Strikes Day 1: Zdeno Chara’s Olympic bed is a wee bit short

Slovakian hockey player Zdeno Chara's bed is way too short, but would you expect anything less out of Sochi?

Olympic Revelations: Zdeno Chara is tall

While the Boston Bruins were sneaking out a point in St. Louis, Chara was in Sochi gearing up for the 2014 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies. In the process he ran into the super tiny and adorable Kirsten Moore-Towers (interesting last name for such a tiny woman), figure skater for Team Canada and listed as a solid 4'10 (Chara is 6'9 if you need a refresher). Ran...

B's young defensemen on display in Chara's absence

Johnny Boychuk walked through the Bruins dressing room on Wednesday afternoon asking teammates and media to “get me my cane” as he stalked off from a post-practice shower. It wasn’t in reference to any general body soreness or pain after throwing his weight around against the Canucks on Tuesday night, but instead about his role as the veteran leader of the B’s defensemen...

Bruins to get a glimpse of life without Chara

With Bruins captain Zdeno Chara heading over to be the flag bearer for his country of Slovakia, the Bruins are left state-side to play two games without their best defensive presence.photo via Boston.comLet's get this much clear: I have no gripes with Zdeno Chara missing two games in the NHL in return for heading to Sochi to participate in the opening ceremony of the Olympics...

Eakins: Bruins’ Chara promised he’d help Marincin

The 2014 Winter Olympics can be a lot of different things to different players. For Edmonton Oilers defenseman Martin Marincin, it’s a golden opportunity to learn from one of the game’s elite. Marincin, 21, has only played in 19 NHL contests, but he’ll be making the trip to Sochi and playing for Team Slovakia with Boston’s Zdeno Chara. Oilers coach Dallas Eakins has known...

The Boston Bruins are in St. Louis to take on one of the best teams in the league, and they’ll have to do that without one of the NHL’s best defensemen. The B’s will take on the Blues in their second-to-last game before the league-wide Olympic break, and they will have to do so without Zdeno Chara. The Boston captain is in Russia where he’ll be the flag bearer for the Slovakian...

Johnny Boychuk's Physical Play Leads Boston Bruins to 3-1 Win

With Zdeno Chara scheduled to miss the next two games for the Boston Bruins as he carries the flag for Slovakia at the Winter Olympics, someone on the B's will have to step up to fill the void.  On Tuesday night, Johnny Boychuk showed he's capable of that task. Boychuk had an assist and set the tone with some bruising hits against the visiting Vancouver Canucks, as the Bruins...

Canucks-Bruins Preview

Coach Claude Julien knows how much captain Zdeno Chara means to the Boston Bruins, but he also believes that the defenseman has earned the right to take part in an important ceremony to represent his country - even if it means Chara has to leave the club. Chara will play for the final time before the Olympic break as Boston hosts the Vancouver Canucks seeking its sixth victory in...

56. Boston Bruins at St. Louis Blues. When's Chara Away, Rask Will Pray.

That's probably Tuukka Rask after looking at the defensive pairing that could be in front of him tonight. It should surprise anyone that Zdeno Chara will not be playing tonight because he's on a plane to ********** Russia. I have no problem with Chara heading to Sochi to be the flag bearer for Slovakia. When the season began Boston made it a point to lower Chara's minutes...

Sochi Olympic Lodging Less Than Ideal For Athletes, Reporters (Photos)

The accommodations at Sochi’s Olympic Village will not exactly be the picture of luxury. In fact, based on photos that have emerged, the world’s best winter sports athletes will be staying in what appears to be a mix between a hostel and a freshman dorm. Boston Bruins captain (and Slovakia flag bearer) Zdeno Chara is going to have a fun squeezing his 6-foot-9 frame into one of...
