Penguins 3, Bruins 2 In a matchup of a few Eastern Conference favorites, the Bruins and Penguins had their first meeting of this condensed season on Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. While the Bruins came out of the gate strong and put up two early goals in the first period, they wound up choking away another lead and falling on their face as the Penguins reeled off three unanswered tallies late in the third period. For B’s fans, it was another one of those “what the hell just happened?” games that the Bruins have had so many of this season, sometimes on the winning side, other times on the downright embarrassing side. As much as they probably should have came away with two points after Tuesday night’s matchup at Consol Energy Center, they deserved to lose easily just as much. You can make up any excuse you want for the B’s – they were on the tail end of a back-to-back and on the road against one of the most talented squads in the league – but the fact of the matter is they had a golden ...

Claude Julien Passes Milt Schmidt on Bruins’ Wins List, But Doesn’t See Himself in Same Class as B’s Legend

BOSTON — The Bruins won an ugly game on Thursday night, and in the process, Claude Julien passed another B’s legend. In a tenure that hasn’t always been aesthetically pleasing or without its bumps in the roads, Julien continued his ascent up the Bruins’ all-time wins list. With Boston’s 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night, Julien passed Milt Schmidt in career...

Dennis Seidenberg Notes Chris Kelly ‘Makes That Third Line Work,’ Bruins Will Miss Defensive Presence (Video)

The Bruins came out on top on the road in Ottawa on Monday, but in the process lost forward Chris Kelly to an injury that was later revealed to be a broken tibia. That means Kelly is out indefinitely, and Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg absolutely admits that Kelly’s presence will be missed, saying Kelly “makes that third line work.” And considering Seidenberg is one of...

Tuukka Rask Doesn’t Mind Facing Heavy Workload So Long as Shots Aren’t Point Blank (Video)

On Thursday Tuukka Rask saw 11 shots in the first period and 12 in the second. And while that’s not an absurd workload, it isn’t exactly an easy night. Overall, the Bruins netminder stopped 29 of 30 shots, and after the game said he doesn’t mind getting tested a bit — so long as the shots aren’t point blank. However, Rask admitted after the 4-1 win over the Florida Panthers...

We here at Outside the Boxscore love trick shots and this one comes to us from the world of hockey as Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin showed off his scoring ability. Watch as he flips a puck from center ice into a bucket near a goal with little effort: (Courtesy of Total Pro Sports)

Chris Kelly Diagnosed With Broken Tibia, Will Be Out Indefinitely

The Bruins may be without Chris Kelly for the long haul. The team announced Wednesday that the third-line center will be out indefinitely after breaking his left tibia Monday against the Senators. Kelly needed to be helped off the ice after a leg-to-leg hit with Ottawa’s Chris Neil. He did not return in Boston’s shootout win and did not dress for the team’s game in Pittsburgh...

Broadcast Blooper: ROOT Sports Pittsburgh isn't sure which Sutter plays for the Penguins

Poor Brandon Sutter. The Pittsburgh forward has been compared to his father, Brent, throughout his young NHL career. Will Brandon be as good as Brent? Which will have more points in the NHL when all is said and done? Brent hoisted the Cup twice, will Brandon? You get the idea. Unfortunately for Brandon, these comparisons never stop - even when he was named the Player of the Game...

24. Boston Bruins at Pittsburgh Penguins. NO MALKIN? NO MERCY!

Man, that banner is like a sleek Accelerator jersey. Black on black baby. Bruins come into Pittsburgh on a three game winning streak after a shootout win against the Senators where Boston comes back from 2 down. It was a tough game for Boston, which doesn't bode well for their legs against the Pens. The only thing that helps Boston is that Malkin is back in Russia...

Chris Kelly Out Indefinitely With Broken Leg

After colliding with the Ottawa’s Chris Neil during Monday night’s Bruins-Senators game, the B’s announced Wednesday that third-line center Chris Kelly will be out indefinitely after a broken left tibia. Kelly needed to be helped off the ice and didn’t return to the game. The recovery period is expected to be around six weeks, but with the shortened season it’s not inconceivable...

Top +/- Rating

There is a new player atop the +/- ratings in the NHL.  It is Chris Kunitz of the Pittsburgh Penguins or Sidney Crosby's left winger.  He has a +22 +/- rating.  While Kunitz is a good player a big part of his league leading +/- comes from playing with Crosby.  Kunitz usually plays with Crosby except for the toughest situations where Crosby double-shifts without him. Kunitz...

Chris Neil Nails Chris Kelly With Knee-on-Knee Hit in Bruins’ Win Over Senators (Video)

As far as dirty hits go, the jury is out on this one. But let’s examine the evidence, and note that the on-ice judges did not give Ottawa’s Chris Neil any penalty minutes after he collided with Chris Kelly. Neil smashed Kelly with a knee-on-knee hit in Monday night’s Bruins-Senators matchup, sending Kelly out of the game. Coach Claude Julien did not give an update on Kelly’s...

RECAP: Thornton Saves Us All. BRUINS WIN!

You know Bruins, you really should learn to show up from the start for these important division games. Look, we know you're very generous and you like to spot overrated teams a couple of goals to boost their self esteem but you can't keep doing this. Though seriously, we do admire your heart to come back from all these deficits. Great practice for the playoffs...

Penguins 3, Maple Leafs 1

Pascal Dupuis scored two of Pittsburgh's three goals in the third period, and the Penguins stormed back to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 on Thursday night and win their seventh game in a row. Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves for Pittsburgh (20-8), which defeated the Maple Leafs 5-4 in a shootout in Toronto five days earlier. Craig Adams sealed this win by scoring into an empty...

Bruins Can’t Blame Fatigue After Another Third-Period Meltdown in Loss to Penguins

The excuses are there if the Bruins want to take them, but they have no one to blame but themselves after their latest third-period stinker. The B’s came into Pittsburgh early Tuesday morning, just hours after playing an overtime game and winning in a shootout over the Senators. After scoring two goals in the first period, the Bruins looked like they were poised to come out of...

Penguins-Maple Leafs Preview

The Pittsburgh Penguins have prevailed in a number of close games during their season-high win streak, including last weekend's visit to the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Evgeni Malkin likely out for a third straight game, the Penguins will try to get past the slumping Maple Leafs again and earn a seventh consecutive victory Thursday night. Pittsburgh (19-8-0) has won by one goal...
