According to Businessweek, Ken Holland and the Detroit Red Wings are the smartest spenders in the NHL over the past five seasons which probably won’t make the Holland haters feel any better about the offseason the Wings had this summer. Businessweek took into account all four major sports in the United States and ranked the Tampa Bay Rays as the smartest spending team across the board while the St. Louis Rams came in dead last. The rankings were based on payroll per wins, with bonuses for wins above .500, playoff wins, and championships. Here’s an example by way of ProHockeyTalk.com… In their Super Bowl winning season in 2011, for instance, the New York Giants got credit for 9 regular season wins, plus a .5 game bonus for their ninth win—the one that put them above .500. Their 4 playoff wins earned them 6.4 more wins. And the Super Bowl victory 8 more, for a total of 23.9 “weighted” wins.
