*NHL ATS Matchup Report*
The Heavyweight showdown will be without one of its heavy hitters however – Pavel Datsuyk underwent knee surgery on Tuesday and is out for 2-3 weeks.
Are you pumped?
Two of the best teams in the NHL do battle on Thursday night with first place in the West on the line.
How close are these teams?
They are separated by two points in the standings, Vancouver is 2nd in goals for in the NHL while the Wings are 3rd and Canucks are 6th in goals against while Detroit is 5th.
Needless to say, Thursday is the game of the week, perhaps the month in the NHL.
Vancouver is coming off their first regulation loss since January 15th on Tuesday when they played fairly well but lost 3-1 to a very tough Nashville team.
Truth be told, the Canucks were due to come up short in a close game. Still, the Canucks are 10-1-3 in their last 14 games overall and are playing the elite level hockey that we have come to expect.
The Sedin line came up empty on Tuesday but Daniel Sedin had six points in two games and Daniel Sedin matched that output in the two games prior.
Line mate Alex Burrows had also been scorching before Tuesday with four points in two games. Vancouver’s fourth line continues to play well – Dale Weiss scored the Canucks only goal on Tuesday night and second liner David Booth looks like the most consistent Canuck from game to game despite being held pointless in three games.
Vancouver is loaded up front – they will need it against an equally deep Wings squad.
Vancouver Canucks vs. Detroit Red Wings Betting Lines & Handicapping
Expect Roberto Luongo to start again Thursday – he is 3-1-0 with a 1.73 goals against average and a .935 save percentage in his last four starts.
Lou is playing as well as any keeper in the NHL at the moment.
The Wings will have a major hole to fill with Pavel Datsuyk out of the lineup. Perhaps Tomas Holmstrom who is surprisingly pointless in 14 games or Juri Hudler who has just two points in his last nine games will step up!
Despite some of the Wings’ struggles, Henrik Zetterberg remains on fire with 11 points in nine games. Drew Miller represents the depth element up front and has two points in his last two games while Valtteri Filppula has recorded points in four of his last five games.
There is a question as to who will start between the pipes for Detroit on Thursday – Jimmy Howard returned from injury on Tuesday and suffered the loss in Chicago while Joey MacDonald has gone 3-0-0 with a 1.33 goals against average in his last three starts.
Betting Prediction: The Wings have been better on home ice than any other team in NHL history with their 23 straight wins. But the absence of Mr. Datsuyk is a huge factor.
The Canucks lost to the Wings in a shootout in their last meeting – in Vancouver.
I like the Canucks to rebound in a big way and repay they favor.
The Wings historic home winning streak has to end sometime – why not Thursday against what should be a very motivated Canucks team!
Pick: Vancouver Canucks +116
