The Washington Capitals rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 in a shootout. The Caps got on the board first with a power play goal by Alexander Ovechkin.  The goal was fed by a cross ice pass from Nicklas Backstrom.  The goal was originally provided to Marcus Johansson, but later awarded to Ovechkin.  It was Ovechkin’s 27th of the season.    After that, the Flyers hammered the Caps and goalie Phillip Grubauer with four consecutive goals.   Philly scored their first late in the first period on a goal by Claude Giroux. Mark Streit scored the game’s only second period goal at the 7:37 mark to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.  Philly would also get the first two markers of the final period on goals from Sean Couturier and Jakob Voracek.  At that point, the Caps appeared headed for a home loss and a rout at the Verizon Center by the hated Flyers.  It didn’t stay that way. The Caps scored three goals in the final 8:40 of regulation to erase the the 4-1 lead.   Mike Green scored his second of the season at the 11:20 mark with a bomb from the blue line.  The Green goal was assisted by Nicklas Backstrom and Johansson.  Five minutes later, the Caps would get a another goal from the deep blue line, with his first goal of the season.   The slap shot was assisted by Eric Fehr and Joel Ward and pull the Caps ti within one goal, at 4-3.  With the clock winding down and Grubauer pulled for the ext a attacker, Alex Ovechkin struck with the equalizer at the 19:12 mark to send the game to overtime.  It was Ovechkin’s NHL leading 28th goal of the season and capped off a 2 goal, 7 shot performance by the Captain. In the shootout, Nicklas Backstrom scored the game winner, as Grubauer stuffed Sean Couturier for his first career shootout win. Just two nights ago, the rookie goalie collected a loss in his first career NHL shootout.  Tonight was different. With the win, the Caps won their sixth game out of their last eight and improved to 18-12-2, with 39 points, 9 points behind division leading Pittsburgh. MULTI-POINT SCORERS Nicklas Backstrom, 2 assists Alex Ovechkin, 2 goals Joel Ward, 2 assists CAPS STREAKS Nicklas Backstrom has a THREE game scoring streak.  Over the last three games, Backstrom has collected 9 points, with 2 goals and 7 assists.
