Eric Staal (photo credit by: Justin K. Aller/Getty Images) There’s always a fear in professional sports that when you trade a player, they’ll be coming back at you at some point with a vengeance. Well guess what? It happened to the Carolina Hurricanes when they lost 5-2 against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 9th, 2013. Jussi Jokinen of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored a hat trick against the Hurricanes Tuesday night, and things couldn’t be better for him on a professional level as it led the Pittsburgh Penguins to their first 3-0-0 string in an opening season since the 1994-95 season. Good for him, right? All the best and well wishes, so happy to see a player do well. The problem with that, is that it was against the Hurricanes, and a fan can’t help but examine the moral implications that come along with being on the receiving end of such great playing by a former teammate. The ‘Canes already have issues, which have been well documented regarding their weak offense, average defense, and all of their troubles with a rampantly fluctuating roster right up until their season opener. Now, they’re being faced with humiliation in the form of being the recipients of providing the Pittsburgh Penguins their strongest opening three game string in 19 years. But the game showed us one very distinct issue that the Carolina Hurricanes really need to address before their next game: visibly giving up to a more aggressive team in the second period. When the third period came around and the hat trick was scored, it was less of a “nail in the coffin” for the Hurricanes, and more of an expected “twist the knife a little deeper”, as they clearly thought the game was over well before anyone else did.
