Flyers Forward Claude Giroux was suspended by the NHL for Game 5 today for a hit on New Jersey's Dainius Zubrus. The frustration of 3 straight games of being outplayed and out hustled wore on Claude Giroux. After a non-call by the referees on a potential Devils penalty, Giroux decided to give the officials a call to make. Giroux hit 6’5″ winger Dainius Zubrus high. He didn’t leave his skates. He didn’t use his elbow. He just hit Zubrus with all he had and with what appeared to be malice. Claude Giroux was looking to make a point. In the end, the Flyers lost game 4 and now trail the Devils 3-1 in this series. Giroux was suspended by the NHL today for Game 5, leaving the Flyers without their best player and one of the best players in the NHL. The hit wasn’t the worst hit I’ve ever seen, but Giroux did clearly target Zubrus’ head. The hit in question is similar to a hit Giroux sustained in the Pittsburgh series by James Neal. Neal was suspended for one game too, though Neal left his feet on the hit and had a history of offenses. It is ironic and telling, though, that in the last series it was the Flyers frustrating the Penguins into stupid hits and bad penalties. Now, it’s the Devils doing the same to the Flyers. So far, the Flyers have had no answers. Now they’ll have to try to stave off elimination without Claude Giroux. Similar Posts:

Claude Giroux's suspension a blow to Flyers playoff hopes

There's never a good time for a headshot to happen on the ice, and there's never a good reason for it. The Philadelphia Flyers found that out the hard way as their top playoff scorer Claude Giroux has been suspended for an illegal hit to the head in last night's loss to the New Jersey Devils. His shoulder made contact with Danius Zubrus' head here on this hit: [youtube...

Claude Giroux Suspended One Game for Hit on Dainius Zubrus

Claude Giroux, star forward for the Philadelphia Flyers and the leading scorer in this year’s NHL playoffs, has been suspended one game for hitting New Jersey Devils forward Dainius Zubrus in the head. Claude Giroux hit on Dainius Zubrus

Here is the latest hit in the NHL that should receive some scrutiny - and the player in question deserves to  miss a game or two because of a suspension - or at least receive a fine. That being said, I would be very surprised if there is a suspension because Claude Giroux is considered an up and coming star players and Brendan Shanahan and the Department of Player Safety doesn...

More gutless: Sacha Treille or Claude Giroux?

Sacha Treille of France on Roman Starchenko of Kazakhstan during the first game of the 2012 IIHF World Championship. The cheap elbow to the head made worse by the gutless Treille incredulously... Full story at Bob's Blitz ~

NHL Suspends Claude Giroux for one game

The NHL Department of Player Safety has finally gotten it right, they have finally suspended a "star" player for committing a dirty hit to the head. I know that there are many Philadelphia Flyers fans that are upset with Shanahan's ruling, I don't blame them because Brendan Shanahan has been very inconsistent, but the fact remains that this was an illegal...

Dangers of Twitter: Flyers broadcaster Chris Therien makes unfortunate Penn State joke

It is unfortunate what allegedly happened to the victims of former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. It is also unfortunate to see a some use Sandusky as a punch-line. It can be even more upsetting to see a professional broadcaster use it when arguing with fans on Twitter. Enter Philadelphia Flyers broadcaster Chris Therien, a former NHL player and now the radio color analyst...

So much for that playoff savior thing

The hero folk tale was supposed to begin at the end of Game 5 in the first-round playoff series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. After falling behind three games to none, Pittsburgh had rallied to win Game 4 by a final of 10-3, and held on to squeak out a 3-2 victory in Game 5. Philadelphia was losing all the momentum it had built, and Flyers star Claude...

Open Post- Will Philadelphia Force A Game 6 In New Jersey?

The Devils lead the series 3-1 and will move on to the ECF with a win tonight. I am sure the Flyers will bring their best tonight and even with Claude Giroux serving a one game suspension, the Flyers have enough offence to win tonight. The question is, do they have enough defense to hold the Devils down? We shall soon find out, puck drops just after 7:30pm ET and can be viewed...

Smart hockey lifts Devils past Flyers

History books will teach that the 2011-12 New Jersey Devils qualified for the National Hockey League's Eastern Conference final at 10:06 p.m. ET on the night of May, 8, 2012. Truth is, the Devils became the third team to reach the NHL's final four at the 19:56 mark of the second period Sunday night. It was in that infinitesimal moment that Flyers center Claude Giroux, whom...

Flyers Face Elimination; Trail Devils 3-1

In order to stage any kind of comeback, you have to play with emotion in the NHL. The Flyers trail the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference Semifinals 3 games to 1, and they have yet to play with any emotional intensity in this series. The Flyers have been flat all series since Danny Briere scored an overtime game winner in the first game 1 of this series. No matter what has...

Devils 4, Flyers 2

NEWARK, N.J. - Dainius Zubrus' goal with 2:13 left in the second period helped the New Jersey Devils rally from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2 Sunday night and take a 3-1 lead in their second-round playoff series. Marek Zidlicky had a goal and assist, Petr Sykora also scored and Zubrus added an empty-net goal. Scott Hartnell and Claude Giroux scored...

A Must Win?

The Flyers are now down 2-1 in the series, and tonight is a must win situation for the Flyers.  Going into this series, Flyers fans were very positive about the Devils, stating that if we play our game, we have a striaght route to the cup. Wells Flyers fans, they aren't playing their game...yet. With the overtime loss on Tuesday, I think the Flyers received the Devils message...

Neither Rhyme Nor Reason

Brendan Shanahan has a tough job. There's little question about it. There's no sarcasm intended there; it's a job most certainly wouldn't want but plenty say they can handle. The NHL's Department of Player Safety is existing in some semblance of a vacuum during the postseason, namely with the hits from this past weekend's Eastern Conference semifinal games...
