PLAYERS: Darren Helm
TEAMS: Detroit Red Wings
The start of the NHL season is a week away. The Detroit Red Wings have slowly been trimming their roster over the past few days and are currently down to a 30-man roster. Seven more players still have to go, along with $2.7 million in salaries to be in compliance with 2013-14 season salary cap. This problem has been known for a while now, but it looks like the Red Wings may have found a solution to their problem. Perhaps not the best solution, more like delaying the inevitable. Jonas Gustavsson is the latest Red Wing to suffer an injury. This opens the door for Petr Mrazek to make the Red Wings’ roster as backup goaltender. (Photo Credit: Dilip Vishwanat / Getty Images)Injuries to Darren Helm, Patrick Eaves, Jordin Tootoo, and Jonas Gustavsson give Detroit the option to place all of them on the injured reserved to start the season. By doing so, the cap issue is fixed and the Wings would only need to send three move players back to their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids. So by my calcu...

The Red Wings’ pre-season performances have been…Underwhelming

I'm not thrilled with the Red Wings' collective or individual performances during their exhibition season, and while I can only scratch my head about the fact that the Wings continue to accumulate injuries (see: Jakub Kindl, Daniel Alfredsson, Jordin Tootoo, Jonas Gustavsson, Patrick Eaves,  Jonathan Ericsson, etc.) at a worrisome pace, I'm glad to see the Free Press...

Zeisberger: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock’s geared up for an Olympian campaign

The Toronto Sun's Mike Zeisberger spoke with Red Wings coach Mike Babcock about his Olympic aspirations, and while the Wings' coach is living the American dream, the man is as dedicated to--as he likes to put it--"sport" (instead of sports), and this February, he's going to soak in the Olympic experience. Ahead of a season in which he's got to balance...

Red Wings-Penguins pre-season quick take: 0-and-3 at home after an unfocused effort

The Red Wings' 5-1 loss to the Pittsbugh Penguins was, to some extent, a case of personnel--the Penguins iced an NHL roster and the Wings were playing minus Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Kronwall, Ericsson, Alfredsson, Kindl, Howard, etc.--and, to some extent, a case of a very green lineup proving what Johan Franzen told Ken Daniels, Mickey Redmond and Chris Osgood during the second intermission...
