No goalie has played more than the 18 games and 1,047 minutes that the Coyotes’ Mike Smith has so far this season. But the Coyotes are not worried about his workload. “Our games have been spread out where he’s getting the rest he needs,” coach Dave Tippett said. “We gave him the one ...rest there when (backup Thomas) Greiss played a couple weeks ago. We’ve got a plan in place and we’ll make sure he’s able to play at the top of his game and not get tired out.” The longest stretch between game action for Smith this year has been three days, from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2. With the team’s penchant for playing in overtime games, Smith has logged nearly half an extra game in overtime minutes alone. The 31-year-old said he feels fresh, although is looking forward to the four days the Coyotes have between facing the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday night and the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday. “It’ll be a time to get some rest and get rejuvenated for another big stretch,” Smith said. There is a facet of Smith’s workload that the Coyotes would like to slim down — his shots faced. Smith by far leads NHL goaltenders with 607 shots against, including 52 by the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. “I would like to give up less shots,” Tippett said. “That being said, there are a lot of shots that are coming from a long ways outside. I think that’s part of the plan against him, put a lot of pucks on him. You’ve got to go through every game and every shot to see where we are, but there are some situations where I think we don’t handle the puck as well as we should, and it leads to shots against.”
