The Detroit Red Wings will be without forwards Stephen Weiss and Johan Franzen when they take on the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday night. Franzen will be missing his fourth consecutive game with an illness and has been placed on short-term injured reserve.  He has not played since November 1st in Calgary and even that night he was only able to log 9:05 of ice time as he reported feeling nauseous.  The move is retroactive so he will be eligible to return as soon as he is healthy enough to play. According to Red Wings beat writer Ansar Khan, Weiss will be missing his first game with a groin injury.  He is considered day-to-day but is expected to miss a week to ten days.  Weiss was able to play over 18 minutes in Thursday night’s loss to Dallas but was not able to practice Friday. Weiss and Franzen join injured defensemen Jonathan Ericsson (shoulder) and Brendan Smith (shoulder) in the press box for the Wings.  Although both Weiss (2g, 1a, -3) and Franzen (2g, 3a, -2) are not off to the start the Wings had hoped for, according to coach Mike Babcock, their absence will leave a considerable hole.  Without these two forwards, the Wings are left without a proven second line center on the line with Daniel Alfredsson as Babcock has no plans to break up top forwards Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. Weiss was one of the Wings’ free agent signings this summer as they essentially swapped for Valtteri Filppula who then signed with the Lightning.  While Weiss has struggled, Filppula has played well centering Tampa’s second line (6g,6a).  Weiss has picked up his play in the face-off circle of late, winning 64% of his draws over the last five games after having a rough open to the season. The Red Wings will need others to step up Saturday night as the welcome the division leading Lightning to Joe Louis Arena where they have not won in their last four games (0-1-3).
