That’s a first for me. During a game between Division III Berry College and Hendrix College, a rather strange occurrence took place when the Berry College pitcher, after uncorking a wild pitch with a runner on 3rd, threw a beautiful body block on the runner scampering home in a vain attempt at preventing him from scoring. As good an open field tackle as it was, the Hendrix player was credited with the run as both benches emptied. After a little investigating, we’ve been able to piece together the circumstances surrounding the bizarre play and the individuals involved. In the bottom of the 5th, with Hendrix up 5-2 after putting up a five spot in the first, CF Collin Radack singled and advanced to 3rd on a pair of back-to-back singles. After the first of the consecutive base hits Berry College brought in No. 37 Levi Austin, who, after giving up a single, faced off against RF Matthew Simmons. It’s debatable whether or not Austin threw at Simmons after he called time late (and got it), because on the very next pitch Austin came inside again on the lefty batter. The ball got away from Berry catcher Devin Skelton, which allowed Radack to come home and score on the wild pitch, albeit after getting laid out by a charging Levi Austin. The runner who appeared to score from 2nd during the confusion was sent back to 3rd after the umps cleared things up, and ended up scoring later in the inning on a fielder’s choice to put Hendrix up 7-2. To add to the craziness, Berry College ended up scoring seven unanswered runs in the final four innings to win the ballgame 9-7 and take the rubber match in the weekend 3-game series. Levi Austin finished with two hits, two walks, one strikeout and one solo tackle in 1.2 innings pitched, which isn’t a great stat line to be sure, but that monster hit alone should garner him defensive player of the week honors. [Kegs 'N Eggs] The post Division III pitcher will do anything to prevent a run, including tackling a runner trying to score appeared first on Last Angry Fan.
