Florida Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson absolutely leveled Winnipeg Jets forward Bryan Little late in the 2nd period on Thursday night. Gudbranson delivered a huge forearm hit to the face of Little and Little went down in pain immediately. Gudbranson was ejected from the game and given a Match Penalty, which means the hit will be reviewed by the NHL automatically. The definition of a Match Penalty from the NHL rulebook is here:
21.1 Match Penalty - A match penalty involves the suspension of a player for the balance of the game and the offender shall be ordered to the dressing room immediately.
A match penalty shall be imposed on any player who deliberately attempts to injure or who deliberately injures an opponent in any manner.
While I don’t think the hit was necessary clean, I think the reason Little got hurt was because of the huge size difference between the two. Gudbranson is 6’5″ 210 lbs, and Little is only 5’11″ 185 lbs. I don’t think Gudbranson will get suspended, but it wouldn’t shock me if he did. Winnipeg went on to win the game Thursday night 7-2.
BEST OF MAXIM
The Florida Panthers Fox Sports Florida announcers Steve Goldstein and Bill Lindsay appear to have finally lost their minds because of their brutal team. On Thursday night the Panthers were losing to the Winnipeg Jets 7-2 and the Panthers inched closer to playoff elimination, all while the Jets fans started to do the wave. Goldstein and Lindsay chose to mail it in for the last...
Boring. Really boring game. But I suppose that was to be expected. There is literally nothing that is good about the Florida Panthers. They are the worst team in the east and arguably the worst team in the league. Combine that with a Pens team that played without their three best players and it equals…

The Pittsburgh Penguins are good. The Florida Panthers are bad. I could end this preview now and it would probably be sufficient to describe what is going to happen tonight. The brilliant folks who write the schedule for the NHL should probably stop giving Florida home games by about mid-season at this point. There will…

It's the 1st-place team in the Eastern Conference against the 15th-place team. Will the Pens stay focused against a weaker opponent?
