CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Lee Stempniak scored the winning goal in the third period and added an assist in the Calgary Flames' 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday night. Stempniak broke a 2-2 tie 5:37 into the third on a beautiful set up from Curtis Glencross, who missed the previous two games because of a wrist injury. Glencross wheeled deep into the Detroit zone and zipped a pass to the uncovered Stempniak in the slot for his seventh goal of the season. Glencross added his ninth at 9:12, capitalizing on Valterri Filppula's turnover along the side boards. Blake Comeau followed with a goal 48 seconds later to make it 5-2. Alex Tanguay and Jay Bouwmeester also scored for Calgary (10-11-4), which won its fifth in a row at home. Niklas Kronwall and Filppula scored for Detroit (12-10-5). The Flames were coming off a disappointing three-game trip to California in which they lost all three games by a combined score of 11-3 to drop to last place in the Western Conference. Miikka Kiprusoff was much sharper Wednesday after giving up 12 goals on 46 shots in his two starts. He was pulled in the third period of his previous game in Los Angeles. He needed to be good early in this one as Detroit outshot Calgary 15-6 in the first period. At the other end, Detroit goalie Jonas Gustavsson struggled. Given the start with No. 1 goalie Jimmy Howard out because of the flu, the 28-year-old Swede finished with only 17 saves. The Red Wings held a 38-22 edge in shots. After Calgary took the lead in the first period, Detroit tied it 2-2 at 16:39 of the second. Kyle Quincey's long wrist shot on a power play was stopped, but Filppula was there to put the rebound past Kiprusoff. The Red Wings snapped an 0-for-37 mark in road power plays. Also earning an assist was 23-year-old rookie Gustav Nyquist, who was recalled Tuesday from Grand Rapids where he as the AHL's leading scorer with 23 goals and 37 assists. Detroit had amassed 69 minutes, 20 seconds in road power-play time before that goal. It was the worst start to a season since the 1928-29 Detroit Cougars, who played a 44-game schedule, failed to score a road power-play goal the entire campaign. Detroit took a 1-0 lead 3:20 into the game when Kronwall sent a slap shot past Kiprusoff. Calgary tied it at 5:55 of the first period on a power play. Tanguay took a pass from Mike Cammalleri and made a deke to his forehand before whipping a shot into the top corner. The Flames took a 2-1 lead at 9:52 on a lucky bounce as Bouwmeester's shot rebounded in off the skate of Detroit defenseman Jakub Kindl. NOTES: The Red Wings, who have lost three straight, continue their three-game road trip through Western Canada on Friday in Edmonton. ... Kiprusoff improved to 4-5-2, while Gustavsson dropped to 1-2-1. ... Bouwmeester's goal was his fifth of the season, matching his best output since coming to Calgary in the 2009-10 season. His career high is 15, which he reached twice in Florida. ... RW Jordin Tootoo was a healthy scratch for the Red Wings. ... Detroit C Cory Emmerton played his 100th NHL game.

Is Iginla going anywhere? Could the Blackhawks be one of them?

With the Calgary Flames currently looking at a pretty sweet lottery pick this year, much talk has been about the availability of star forward, Jarome Iginla. Iginla trade talk has been a hot topic for a few years now especially with the downward spiral Flames team where they seem to be limited in prospects and [...]

John Toperzer: Pens fans in no rush for Iginla

poll by Poll Results Question: Would you give up a No. 1 pick and a top defensive prospect in exchange for Calgary's Jarome Iginla? Fifty-five percent of voters do not believe Jarome Iginla is worth the cost to the Penguins and that the team is doing just fine without him. Cap1681 summarized the opinion of many voters nicely. “The problem...

Colin Dambrauskas: Is Feaster Finally Ready to Make Changes?....Interest In Chris Stewart?

Follow me on Twitter!: @ColinDJD The Calgary Flames lost again in L.A. last night against the defending Stanley Cup champs. Though the loss wasn’t as bad as Saturday night it’s in no way a positive, and coming home after a 0-3 road trip, it’s time to make some drastic changes in Calgary. The bottom line is Calgary hasn’t played a full three periods of...

Predators-Flames Preview

Though the Calgary Flames have had their share of problems recently, they've been playing extremely well at home. That may not bode well for a Nashville Predators team struggling on the road lately. Calgary seeks a sixth straight home victory Friday night while trying to deal Nashville an eighth defeat in its last nine road contests. The Flames were outscored 13-3 during a...

Red Wings-Flames wrap-up: ‘disturbing’ is the right word to describe this loss

The Detroit Red Wings flew to Edmonton after their 5-2 loss to the Calgary Flames, and after a third-period brain fart of epic proportions, and given that the Wings have gotten all of 1 point out of three games against the worst of the West in Columbus and Calgary, there was no reason to stick around. The Wings will be out of the playoff pack in terms of the standings by the time...

Early Morning/Late Night Trade Talk

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, - Keep an eye on the Los Angeles Kings if and when the Calgary Flames and Jarome Iginla decide to begin divorce proceedings.  While it’s been widely (and accurately) reported that Boston and Pittsburgh have interest in the Flames captain should he become available, I believe the Kings would be right there in the mix as well and could...

Red Wings-Flames quick take: inefficiency, bad positioning, bad performances = reinforcements needed

The Detroit Red Wings dropped a 5-2 decision to the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, and I'd prefer to not discuss the goals as much as a stat that tells the whole story tonight: The Red Wings out-shot Calgary 38 to 22, and when you add the shots the Wings either fired into Flames players or wide of Miikka Kiprusoff, the Wings out-shot-attempted the Flames 73 to 38. That...

Colin Dambrauskas: Where Does Iginla End Up?....Flames Game Day vs Predators

Follow me on Twitter!: @ColinDJD Tonight the Calgary Flames look to extend their at home win streak to six straight games as they host the Nashville Predators. Nashville is 10th in the Western Conference and four points ahead of Calgary with only one more regulation win than the Flames. They are a lot closer to a playoff spot than the Flames so it won’t be an easy game...

Colin Dambrauskas: The For Sale List & The Grocery List...+ Game Day Blog

Follow me on Twitter!: @ColinDJD Tonight the Calgary Flames will play host to the Detroit Red Wings who carry a 3-5-2 record on the road and are 5-3-2 in their last ten games played. While the Flames are struggling, the Red Wings haven’t been doing much better and are arguably in a similar situation as the Flames given that they have recently been struggling to find...

Game 28: Nashville @ Calgary – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Photo by Frederick Breedon/Getty Images Amazingly, this is the first meeting of these two teams this year completing the lineup of Western Conference teams the Predators have faced this season. The Predators have an average start for the month of March while the Flames are tied for last in the West (Colorado) but only four points behind the Predators. The Flames are riding the middle...

Red Wings Burned by Flames, Lose 5-2

Red Wings fall in glorious, epic proportion, 5-2 to the Calgary Flames. I’ll just make this quick and painless. The first period was all Red Wings. They dominated in shots and also in scoring chances. Niklas Kronwall opened the scoring the Wings only 3:20 into the game, sniping a slapshot from the far [...]
