To many Badger fans the name Blake Geoffrion brings smiles to their faces. He was arguably one of the most popular players of the past decade or so. It's hard not to like the 2010 Hobey Baker Award winner and was one of three captains on the national runner up team that season. Needless to say he had a bright future ahead of him in the NHL.
However, that once bright future is now over as Geoffrion told the Montreal Canadians on Wednesday that he will not be continuing his career as a hockey player. He suffered a bad brain injury in November of 2012 thanks to this brutal hit:
Geoffrion's dad has said publicly that they were lucky just to have Blake alive following that hit and while he attempted to make the comeback it appears it just wasn't working out.
As hard as this decision has been credit Geoffrion for taking a big picture look at his life in the future. Is playing a game you love really worth not being there physically or mentally, or even dying for?
As much as we all love sports (after all that's why we're here reading this) there has to be more to life and we wish Blake well in recovering from this injury and moving forward in his life. Once a Badger, always a Badger!
